    Hurricanes @ Maple Leafs - Feb. 22nd, 7:00pm - SN, TSN 1050

tough breaks but that's what happens when you play most of the game in your own end

Steeves looked like a goal scorer on that play.

    Congrats Alex Steeves. About time.

    4 Nations Face-Off

This does not surprise me. He played a really good defensive game the other night but was pretty ineffective offensively. Kind of like how he's looked a lot of this season. I bet he winds up having some kind of surgery after the season.

Yes, because the average job is exactly like being an NHL player in a salary-capped world. Exactly! LOL.

    4 Nations Face-Off

That's fine. But career totals are almost identical for the two of them. Marner 710 pts in 630 games (1.13/game), Matthews 694 in 602 (1.15). Playoffs are even closer, 50 in 57 for Marner and 48 in 55 for Matthews. Matthews plays center so he should probably slot in higher because of that, but...

    4 Nations Face-Off

He's not as good as Draisaitl but he can legitimately claim to be the best overall player on the Leafs. Matthews is a better goal scorer (plus plays center) but Marner is by far and away the best playmaker, so good defensively and an excellent penalty killer. I think he'll ask for at least what...

2024-25 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

There's a lot of room between league minimum and the maximum that some team is willing to pay. 6x$3.5 sounds great to me. 3x7, not so much. But hey, if he wants to chase dollars that's his prerogative. How many dollars does one person need? After I'd earned $100 million I think my main goal...

2024-25 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

That's why it needs to be Tavares who is proactive about this. Otherwise I agree, they'll offer him top dollar. He could still take less if winning is more important than earning a few extra dollars. Marner's getting a new deal, Knies will need a new deal, those extra cap dollars will get used...

2024-25 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

Tavares has earned well over $100 million in his career. If he really wants to win a cup in Toronto, this would be the time to go to management and say "I know I could get $7 million (or whatever) on the open market, but let's do something that really helps the team." And even with the cap going...

    Canucks vs. Maple Leafs - Feb. 8th, 7:00pm - SN, Fan 590

I don't know what to think about Robertson any more. I think he still might go on to become a good goal scorer for some team, in the right situation but it's not going to be here. He needs a reset. Looks like he's always trying to do too much himself. Domi has really taken multiple steps back...

He still doesn't look right to me. Wish he wasn't playing in this 4 nations thing.

Geez, I never really considered that but it makes a lot of sense, especially as the Oilers have been collecting ex-Leafs for years now.

    Armchair GM Thread 2024-25

I don't see Knies being part of any trade package, he's just too valuable to the Leafs. Marer would have to agree and I doubt he would. So obviously you're left with Minten/Cowan/Domi/Robertson types. Maybe McMann? I have to admit that I haven't really watched Cozens play enough to know what...

    Armchair GM Thread 2024-25

Cowan isn't ready to make a meaningful impact this year...he looked much better in preseason last year than he did this year. Not sure what's up with that. Jarnkrok is an NHL capable player, but with 5 career playoff goals in 93 games he's not the guy who is going to solve the perennial spring...

    Wild @ Maple Leafs - Jan. 29th, 7:00pm - SN, Fan 590

There are a few things that have me shaking my head about Berube (and maybe Treliving to a degree). One of them is the usage of Robertson. The guy has a non-stop motor and makes things happen out there. He's very creative and a better passer/playmaker than most give him credit for. And of course...

Another 1 goal game. Definitely playoff-ready.

Pretty much going through the motions in this game, and quite a few others recently. Mostly content to stay on the perimeter and not engage. Blech.

It's definitely tough to watch right now. Still hoping that it will pay dividends in the playoffs but I'm not sure - seeing the same kinds of things now that we've seen most playoff series. The big one, inability to score. This game felt like it was over when Minnesota scored their second goal.
