    Armchair GM Thread 2025/26

I like Rielly the person, but I don't want him to suffer here either. Sometimes change is good. That said, I think the Leafs could make him work here if they used him as sheltered weapon instead of trying to even out his weaknesses with a stay-at-home partner that can't skate or pass. Or maybe...

Coaching and management changes around the league

The number I heard for Ryan Johnson (GM) is less than league min for an NHL SPC, so… I guess they’re going for intern energy?

Rielly’s decision making hasn’t changed and now it isn’t masked as easily by his skating speed

    Leafs part ways with Berube

Those Berube reports read to me like they were coming from Berube lol Chayka and Sundin picked his brain for all the notes and firsthand scoops and then let him go gently. Now they have about 15+ candidates’ worth of outside and inside assessments to build off of for free.

    Armchair GM Thread 2025/26

I think the dollar delta should cost the Canucks something. Toronto would be saving them nearly 4M for 4 years and then another 23.2M those last two years.

    Leafs part ways with Berube

Because a coach usually needs 2 years to get a real system going and to get to know and grow with key personnel; Leafs can offer that easily at above market rates, where the USD salary goes a little bit farther in Canada. Coaching the Leafs also comes will all the perks of Toronto: MLSE travel...

    Leafs part ways with Berube

I also think some interpretations of the Leafs impending demise making Toronto no longer a fashionable choice for the Matthews and top coaches of the NHL are a bit off: these people have tremendous egos. They envision themselves to be the one that fixes the problem, that pushes the team over the...

    Leafs part ways with Berube

There are three types of coaches in the league. The bulk of them are, yes, disposable mercenaries. A subset are just plain poop and not capable of succeeding in the game nowadays. And an even smaller subset are builders who have established a foundation and identity that is aligned with the...

    Armchair GM Thread 2025/26

Do this at the draft: To TOR: Elias Pettersson (6 yrs remaining, 11.6M AAV), 2026 2nd (SJS), + someone Brackett thinks is on the cusp in their system for taking on the extra $$ To: VAN: Morgan Rielly (4 yrs remaining, 7.5M AAV) I wanted to throw in a cap dump, but other than Domi, we don't...

Now that he's official, you're not going to be able to hear from Judd Brackett on anything while he's with the Leafs. So here's some recent material on how he does Draft Combines, interprets development, etc.:
