2012-2013 Marlies Signings Thread...

Defensemen Simon Gysbers signed and Dylan Yeo if anyone is interested.  With Holzer to the Leafs likely and Mikus, Finger, Lashoff all gone these become important vet cogs.  Guys like Reilly and Finn not eligible for the Marlies yet, Percy may spend another year at Junior and Granberg not slated to come over until 2013.

Yeo seems to be a guy that flips between the ECHL and AHL so this isn't much to speak of.  I like Gysbers though and Kostka should be a solid addition.  Blacker and if Percy sticks may be the only legit defensive prospects with the Marlies next season.

Marlies have re-signed Mike Zigomanis!

Call Don Cherry in from the window edge.

mirtle: Marlies re-sign forwards Mike Zigomanis and Will Acton. They also add defenceman Dylan Yeo as free agent.

I don't know about you guys but I am pumped about this upcoming Marlies season.

Ouch!  You just broke my sarcasm meter.  :(

I am still going to follow the Marlies and hope they win where the Leafs falter no matter how mean you are.  >:(

Didn't some NHLers play in AHL last lockout?

How does that work with a guy like Frattin on a one way?

Ziggy signed an AHL-only contract, apparently.

Cherry will still be mad.

Must have really wanted to stay with the Marlies. I know he doesn't have much (if any) NHL potential at this point, but guys like him can still get NHL contracts just to play with the farm team. Glad he's sticking around. If Kadri and/or Colborne go up to the NHL the Marlies depth down the middle will take a big hit.

Mark Fraser was re-signed today; he formed the Marlies' top defensive pairing in the Calder Cup playoffs along with Korbinian Holzer.

Here's part of the news release:

Brian Burke, President and General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs, announced Monday that the hockey club has signed defenceman Mark Fraser to a one-year contract.

Fraser, 25, split the 2011-12 American Hockey League season between the Toronto Marlies and Syracuse Crunch, former affiliate of the Anaheim Ducks, registering seven assists, a plus-15 rating (+15) and 67 penalty minutes in 45 games. The 6-4, 220-pound defenceman helped lead the Marlies to the 2012 Calder Cup Final, posting three assists and 31 penalty minutes in 17 playoff games

I don't know anything about Yeo. I like the Zigomanis & Fraser re-signings - particularly Fraser because he provides some depth for the NHL team on D and he's the only really tough physical dman the Marlies had.

AHL Vet rule:
Of the 18 skaters (not counting two goaltenders) that teams may dress for a regular-season game, at least 13 must be qualified as "development players." Of those 13, 12 must have played in 260 or fewer professional games (including AHL, NHL, IHL and European elite leagues), and one must have played in 320 or fewer professional games. All calculations for development status are based on regular-season totals as of the start of the season.

Zigomanis, Hamilton, Orr & Aucoin have played more than 320 pro games in the regular season.

Fraser, Kostka & Yeo have played more than 260 reg season pro games but less than 320 so any of them can play as a 6th vet.

So if they're all healthy, one will have to sit out.

Assuming the Leafs add some sort of goalie, the Marlies seem as good or better defensively than last year when they were one of the top defensive clubs in the AHL. Adding Aucoin strengthens them down the middle and improves them offensively.

I would guess that they'll add Ross & McKegg from the CHL and maybe Carrick & Devane (if they're not ECHL bound). There's a decent chance this club could be better than last year as Mueller, Dupuis & Mikus are the only ones who played more than a 1/2 season that have departed with Kadri having a good shot to crack their NHL line up (or bust). I think the Leafs may add a 7th dman to try for depth so Holzer or that dman will play for the Marlies.

Of course, some of that could get shuffled with a trade  and I also think that's very likely. Regardless, the Marlies should be a good team next season.

Not having Frattin, Kadri, Gardiner, Dupuis(who played very well in the AHL) and Holzer for next years AHL playoffs could seriously hurt their chances though. Not sure Aucoin and Kostka alone, make up for that.

Your break down of the vets certainly makes one wonder if we see a Lombardi, Connoly or both down in the AHL this season.  Still too many bodies up with the Leafs and adding these vets to the Marlies team really ensures that Burke needs to move some more fodder off the big club before the puck drops.

Not necessarily signings, but this will boost the Marlies. 22 players have been assigned to the AHL team, including Colborne, Gardiner, and Kadri. Tyler Biggs, David Broll, Stuart Percy and Morgan Rielly have been assigned to their CHL teams.

Several notable young guns have also been assigned to the AHL including Jeff Skinner of the Hurricanes and the Oilers duo of Eberle and Nugent-Hopkins. We won't be seeing any of them at Ricoh as the Marlies do not face OKC or Charlotte.
