Toronto Maple Leafs General Manager Kyle Dubas provided the following update today on the status of prospect Rodion Amirov, the team's first round (15th overall) pick from the 2020 NHL Draft:

"I regret to inform our fans that Rodion Amirov has been diagnosed with a brain tumour.

Rodion commenced the 2021-22 season with Salavat Ufa of the KHL but suffered an injury to open the season. During the course of his recovery from this injury, he developed some new, unrelated symptoms that required ongoing extensive investigations over the last few months.

Rodion is currently undergoing treatment at a medical facility in Germany and will not return to play for the remainder of the season.

Our medical staff has been involved throughout the process alongside Ufa's and we are in direct contact with the facility on an ongoing basis to monitor his treatment and care. Rodion has the complete support of the Toronto Maple Leafs organization and we will continue to ensure he receives the best care possible throughout this process.

Out of respect for Rodion and his family, the Club will not have any further comment at this time."

Brutal, just awful news. Hockey aside obviously, just hope he recovers.

This is just terrible, I know what his family is going through.  Prayers for his full recovery.

Hope he can recover 100%
even better if he can still play but that is not the main thing. Get Healthy soon Rodion!

I was afraid it was something like this :( I hope he can get well enough to do what he loves

Recovery is the only thing that matters.  Hopefully it's caught early and hopefully its a relatively benign lesion.

Not a lot of cases to know whether he has much of an opportunity to resume a professional hockey career after treatment.  There are some athletes who definitely have but I can't think of any NHL players.

Bottom line though all I want to do is see him recover.

Quite a blessing to be in a line of work where his health was being so closely monitored (maybe especially due to the injury); he's not out of the woods by any stretch, but this otherwise could easily have been a ticking timebomb.

What horrible news to wake up to as a fan let alone what he and his family are going through. Our prayers are with you Rodion.

They did an update on HNIC on Rodion.  Showed him doing some exercises and talked about him skating 3 times a week on ice that the Leafs are paying for. Done his first round of chemo
