Now that Wayne has settled his case with the league there are many rumours that have him coming to the Leafs front office (again) in some capacity. Does he come to Toronto, and where does he fit in?

He'd probably still outscore half the lineup.

Gordie Howe played his last NHL season at the same age Gretzky is now (52), and managed to get 40 points. I think Wayne could still get 50. Gretzky holds more NHL records than anyone else. Why not break the age barrier?

Screw the front office, give him the #1 C !!!
Think he'd coach?

Ummm, considering how he fared in Phoenix, I wouldn't go anywhere near that idea.
True.  A real coach like Scotty Bowman would only touch a stacked roster.
How well do you think Randy Carlyle would be doing if his top two goalies this season were Ilya Bryzgalov and Mikael Tellqvist?

based on stories I hear from fans in Phoenix I would not be giving any praise to Gretzky's coaching.

if they bring him in now would he be eligible for the alumni game in detroit?

lol...and can I get a 99 leafs jersey too?

I appreciate that the whole "Gretzky was never a Leaf" thing is still a burr under some saddles but as I asked the last time this topic came up...what position could he take in the front office that wasn't either A) a waste of his time or B) a position of far greater responsibility than he's proven capable of?

Since it wouldn't cost me one penny, I can say that he may be instrumental in attracting some free agents...even just for that it would be pretty cool.

Would he really though? I could be wrong but while he's obviously a great icon and hero for a lot of players I'm not sure that he'd be a real factor in getting free agents to sign on the dotted line.

Especially when you consider that a prominent free agent is likely not going to sign for anything less than 4-5 years and significant money.

For those suggesting that Gretzky could come out of retirement to play comparing his age with Gordie Howes when he retired. That would not wok for several reasons. First Howe was still playing and had not retired. I think even if Gretzky had not retired he could not have lasted as long as Gordie Howe. First of all Howe was bigger stronger size wish. Secondly Gretzky's greatest asset was his quickness. He was always a step ahead of other players. He has or will have lost a step or two.  Third Dave Semenko has  retired.

Given his offensive abilities he might make a good assistant coach. He may be lacking the skill to develop a defensive strategy. While he player his speed and the threat offensively made up for his defensive short comings.
