A lot of talk about this number 1 NCAA defenceman prospect becoming a UFA. Currently his rights are held by Anaheim, but chances of them signing him appear slim.

Ironically, he is the reason the Ducks let Gardiner go. Wouldn't it be something if Burkie managed to sign him, too.

Leafs, Oilers, Canucks and Wings all said to be interested, as are virtually all GMs.

Considered a top-notch powerplay quarterback. Stay tuned...

I don't really see how he solves our problems.  Sure he likes Gardiner and everything, but my guess is that he's going to go to the team that pretty much guarantees him ice-time.  The Leafs can do that, but they need stable experienced defensemen there to help out the younger guys, not a big question-mark who might be good.  If he's ok playing in the minors, he's a great pickout though.

I think people are getting way ahead of themselves here. Every team in the league will be after this guy. I know people love mentioning that he played with Gardiner but even if they weren't just teammates but were BFF's the likelihood is that he's not going to make his decision based on having a friend around to go to the movies with.

He was Gardiner's defence partner and may be excited about the thought of a reunion.  He's also a guy that may be NHL ready, according to someone in super-high authority somewhere... whom I can't remember right now.  :P

Or he maybe didn't get along with Gardiner despite their being teammates. Craig Smith on Nashville was also on that U of W team. Does that give Nashville a leg up? How about the Kings and Canadiens who had draft-picks on that team?

Again, I'm not saying the Leafs can't or shouldn't sign him, just that people are getting ahead of themselves.

Not that I think it means much, but...

?We?d always talked about playing together someday in the NHL,? Gardiner told the Register after a recent Toronto Maple Leafs practice. ?Right now it?s not going to happen. Hopefully someday down the road.?

?We talked about playing pro together,? said Gardiner. ?People always asked us about playing on the same pro team, our answer was always were not there yet. We definately talked about it though because we?re really good friends.?

...

Although they aren?t bolstering the same blue line anymore, they stay in touch and even make plans when possible.

?I was actually talking to him a couple of days ago and I?m going to go back to Wisconsin for the All-Star break to see him and get some skating in,? said Gardiner. ?It?s good working with him because we teach each other little things.?

Again, I don't particularly think it means much, but it certainly seems like they, at the very least, are friends.

Fair enough. Like you, I still don't think that will mean a ton but it's something.

Yeah, but this is a unique case where I think they are actually bffeaeaeaea, and each has the other half of a necklace.

If I was drinking I would have spit it everywhere. This made me laugh so much hahahaha!

Michael Russo of the Star Tribune is reporting that Shultz has already picked his team, and on his Twitter feed he says his guess is Toronto.

I'm not sure how connected this guy is though, he also claims the Ducks might be preparing a tampering case against the team that signs him.

If Shultz is as good as everyone is making him out to be, I don't think the Leafs will care too much about paying a fine or forfeiting a draft pick to get him.

If it improves the team and we can trade another piece that isn't as good, what's not to like about signing this kid? Maybe a pairing from Wisconsin isn't a bad idea, especially if they click again and are around for a long time to come.

Pronman figures if Shultz was in this years draft, he'd go in the 7-10 range... Just thought it give folks an idea at what kind of talent we're talking about here.

Not really. He's 22. That's going to give him a big edge in physical maturity and make him much less of a question mark.

Just passing along Pronman's 2 cents. I obviously have no idea but maybe he figures while Shultz can step in and play right away, there's a chance hell never be considered "elite" which might put is value back out of the top 5. Either way, we're taking a top 10 pick calibre guy (I think.)

And I'm saying it doesn't say much about Schultz. Bozak was billed as being a 1sr round equivalent because he was more of a known quantity but that really said more about the nature of the draft than Bozak.

... and he said in this years draft which I suppose means that if one knew a thing or two about Schultz, he/she could probably formulate an idea on the talent level in this upcoming first round.

To me, that says Pronman sees him as more of a 2nd pairing type, because that's what the guys going in that range in this years draft are likely going to be.
