markhmasters: Leafs acquire forward Nicolas Deschamps from Ducks in exchange for forward Luca Caputi; Deschamps assigned to AHL's Marlies

I was hoping/expecting to get more out of Caputi than just 26 NHL games since the Poni trade.  He showed some decent glimpses.

@DownGoesBrown The Maple Leafs have traded Luca Caputi to the Ducks, hopefully for somebody who actually can score on Frank D'Angelo.

;D

Same here, I always liked Caputi and thought he could've played in the NHL.  I wish him luck in the Ducks' organization.

Between his injuries and the improved depth in the organization, he just didn't have a future as a Leaf. Not sure Deschamps does either, but, certainly doesn't hurt to give a guy a fresh start in a new organization to see if he can take the ball and run with it.

Oh yeah, no doubt.  I remember at the time many of us were pleased to be getting one of Pittsburgh's higher ranked prospects for Poni.  Finished off the season with the big club scoring 6 points in 19 games and we thought we may have something there.  Too bad it didn't work out because I'm sure he would have loved to succeed in his hometown.

I know nothing about Deschamps and unfortunately, have no expectations of him.

Huh... Leafs now have the Ducks first TWO picks of the 2008 draft...  Gardiner/Deschamps

Was going to say, he's a Burke draft so he likely has a good idea what he's got.

Strange one, Caputi seemed to have some physical skills that set him apart, albeit not really utilizing them here due to injury.  Deschamps seems like run of the mill minor league depth, perhaps it's Burke buttering up the Ducks, giving them some size in hopes of fleecing them in another deal down the line, ala Lupul and Gardiner for Beauchemin.

Deschamps being drafted by Burke is probably a factor too, must have some personal makeup that I'd assume Burke likes.

It's probably a little unfair to label a guy who's only 22 as just minor league depth. He had a pretty good rookie year in the AHL too.

I think, because of the age and injuries, Deschamps is probably the better prospect at this point although I agree it's not a big deal either way.

My Bad. Didn't see this thread.

Minor league trade at best. Whens the big one coming Brian? Its time to shake up the bench.

20 years ago the Doug Gimour trade went down. Now that was a trade!! :)

Hockey Prospectus wrote up a scouting report on Deschamps for those interested:

Caputi wasn't NHL bound anyway. Taking on Deschamps is basically a shot in the dark that he shows some unexpected development, but in all likelihood this will probably be remembered as a nothing trade.
