Letang wants to be a Leaf?

Sounds like agent trying to put pressure on Pens for his deal.

That's probably all there is to this story. But I will say that its been a long time since a highly skilled player, playing on a really good team has expressed an interest in moving to the Leafs. Players are taking notice of what Nonis is doing here, and want to be a part of it. That's new, and exciting for Leaf fans to see.

Nonis hasn't done anything yet except trade for Bernier and the jury is still out on that trade. Give it a week and let's see what Nonis has accomplished come July 6th

Man, people or so particular.  ;). "Players are taking notice of what Leaf management has been doing." Better?

Even if Letang doesn't come to Toronto, it's so nice that the team is finally in a position where, when it's rumoured that a good player would like to come here, the automatic gut response isn't, "yeah, there's no way that could be true".

Well, you could always wait until Letang actually reveals his own reasons for why he might want to come to Toronto before inventing them for him based on your own reading of the situation. Crazy, I know.

I don't even get your point Nik. Who is it that is inventing anything. LOL.

Clearly so I'll make it easy for you then. Letang hasn't said why he would want to come to Toronto. It could be any number of reasons. He might want to play in a Canadian city. He might be friends with someone on the team. His girlfriend might be from here. He might really, really, like spending his Sunday afternoons at the ROM. He might just see the Leafs as a big market team with a ton of cap space they'd be willing to give him. I don't know. So one isolated report from a reporter who says he'd like to come to Toronto if things don't work out in Pittsburgh may reveal his intentions but they do nothing to reveal motives. You, however, want to attribute it to a positive impression of the job Nonis is doing because, well, that's how you feel.

Until Letang actually says something we might not want to speak for him.

My bad. Sorry for having an opinion on an opinion board. So, instead of seeing this in any sort of positive light, or maybe expressing an opinion of your own, your mandate is to ridicule and debunk other posters opinions? It never grows old for ya eh?

Well, for starters, I've never really heard it referred to as an opinion board. Discussion board, yes. Forum, ok. So a place for discussion. Even if it were an "opinion" board that doesn't mean that opinions aren't subject to critical evaluation. I absolutely think that as an intelligent member of said discussion board that contributing to said critical evaluation is part of my, well, I wouldn't say mandate but purview.

And in case you missed it the opinion of mine that I presented is that we shouldn't speak for Kris Letang or read more into this one report than was actually said.

Whatever Nik. Molehill-mountain it away...

I'm very skeptical of this. We all know Rossi said Toronto is Letang's "preferred destination" but that's only if he can't get a deal done in Pittsburgh, and his overwhelming preference is to say in Pittsburgh. This talk of Letang to Toronto is all very premature at this point.

With that said, we're probably looking at Gardiner, Kulemin, and a 1st, and possibly more.

"I love the smell of napalm in the morning"

No way I'd do this.

Huh, Letang is less than 4 years older than Gardiner? That's not a huge difference in the grand scheme of things. I mean, if Gardiner goes the other way, one certainly can't accuse Nonis of going against his 'he'd only trade youth for youth' thing.

Well, exactly. Letang has no say in where he's traded so the only reason the Penguins would have to trade him to Toronto is if Toronto is where they could get the best possible deal for him. That spells a hefty price tag.

And even then I mean, if I'm a NHL agent and I want to kick up interest in my client? First thing I do is leak a rumour that he wants to come to Toronto. "______ to Toronto" rumours this time of year are pretty cheap.

When an long term extension is key to getting the best return the players preference comes into play. Like Jordan Staal last year.

It can. But it's not the same as a player having a NTC. Saying that a player's preference would be Toronto isn't the same as saying that's the only place he'd go. Even still Jordan Staal didn't come cheap.

Imagine a Phaneuf/Letang top pairing.

*begins to daydream*

You and me both.  I am so impressed with Letang.  His skating is just KKKKRRRAAZZZYYY.

I think I'd be more inclined to base a deal around Rielly +.  I love what Gardiner did in the playoffs and, if you add a Letang, Gardiner is closer to sticking and contributing with the big club.
