Marlies Training Camp Thread

The Marlies training camp kicks off this Thursday and the team announced their training camp roster earlier today:

Scrivens and Aucoin are both on the roster despite not being placed on waivers earlier in the month. That means they've likely already signed AHL-only contracts or will in the coming weeks. No Colton Orr on the roster as he also wasn't waived. Wonder what that means for his future.

It's going to be very difficult for guys like Ross, McKegg, and Carrick to crack this line-up I think.

With Kadri assigned to a wing, no Dupuis and Colborne the defacto #1 pivot, they should allow McKegg every opportunity to win the second line center role with Ziggy centering the shutdown line. McKegg has excellent offensive instincts and if they put a defensively responsible vetran on a line with he and Kadri then it could work..

I'd like to see Colborne be the #1 guy but isn't Aucoin like the Gretzky of the AHL or something? I don't know, I'd kind of like to see Colborne earn the job away from Aucoin... Know what I mean?

Yeah I see it going Aucoin-Colborne-Zigomanis down the middle.

Good to see Komarov is stickin' around.

Looks like Leo Komarov will wear 87 with the Marlies. Same number he wore with Moscow Dynamo #Marlies

Yeah I was wondering about that as he would have likely gone back to Russia by now if that was his intention. Makes an already crowded forward group that much deeper.

I know they have a responsibility to ice a competitive team down there by hook or by crook, but I'm glad they are moving away from career AHL'ers towards more guys that are still considered 'prospects' of sorts, especially when it is so crowded.

I'd like to see them do even more, cut guys like Scott for example.

I think McKegg will surprise and end up with a fairly significant role on the team.  His two-way game and his skating is somewhat underrated.

I could actually see him pushing Zigomanis to the wing, which if memory serves, happened quite a bit in the latter half of last year with Dupuis and Deschamps eating up a good chunk of the other C spots.

Aucoin could also move to the wing.

Take solace dear hockey sufferers, but...hockey (of some sort) is back!!  :D

Hopefully, we'll have something to cheer about again!  :) :) :)

GO MARLIES!!  (Yes, this soon)!  ;D

Screw the NHL. All of the players I want to watch are in the AHL this year!

Are there online feeds for games and whatnot?

Yeah, that's kind of where I'm at. Sure, I'd love for NHL hockey to be back but I'm pretty sure a heavy dose of AHL hockey will satisfy me for as much as a year.

Damian Cox describes some of the testing that the Marlies will be going through during the first few days of training camp:

? In groups of five, players start at the goal line, race to the other goal line, come to a full stop, then race back to the top of the faceoff circles at the other end. All will be wearing heart monitors. Their times and heart rates will be recorded then, after a 30-second rest, they do the drill again. In all, they do it six times, all the time racing against teammates.

? The second test is for endurance. Players start at one goal line, race to the other goal line, stop, and then skate back and forth as many times as possible in 30 seconds. They then rest and recover for four minutes. Then they try to cover the maximum distance they can in one minute. Then another four-minute rest. Then a two-minute skate.

Speaking of which, how will you guys be getting your fixes?  Personally, Leaf TV is not a real appetising option.  I will certainly catch a game or two (especially now that my kids are becoming old enough to enjoy an outing), but how else will you stay up to date?

Pure sports? The NFL and AHL should get the lion's share this winter. Sprinkle in a wee bit of OHL and I'm good. I might jump on the Raptors bandwagon again depending on how they do but I doubt it.

Expected, but nice to see it confirmed.

Season-ticket sales are up 74 per cent. Single-game tickets are going three times faster than they were at this point last season.

And the major networks are more interested than ever in broadcasting games, on television and radio.

If any one team stands to benefit the most from the NHL lockout, the Toronto Marlies appear to be it.

That season ticket sales number is impressive.  Single ticket sales in general being up is not surprising but for season seats to climb like that is huge.

I have to say again, it is a great event to take the family and kids to, plus being so much more of an intimate venue than the ACC you get a much more up close view of everything.  And when the kids aren't bugging me to make the 15th concession or washroom trip of the game, I get to put my scouting hat on and see how some of these players are doing. :)

My concern about the Marlies is that I don't see an enforcer on the roster yet. No Rosehill, no Orr. What happens if some career AHL fourth liner decides he wants to clobber an NHL prospect?

Ross

Ross will fight but he's no "enforcer". He's the guy who will have half the other team wanting his head, and needs an enforcer on the bench!!
