Martin Brodeur...

This isn't the same Brodeur from 10 years ago, he's lost quite a bit of what he once was.

totally agreed.  he's also 40 years of age.  but I guess i'm of the thinking that the leafs don't need a goalie for a long time.  They have to hope at least one of their prospects will turn into the real thing.  It's about adding some stability until that point.  Maybe a year with Marty would go a long way

Even on the development side of things; letting our young goaltenders see how he handles pressure, prepares for games, the way he plays, etc.  I think he could steal some games and provide a great learning (and calming) experience.  Plus, how nice would it be to have a goalie that could actually play the puck?

I think signing Brodeur (or trading for a Thomas) would be the best move.  We only need someone for 1 or 2 years and he would slot in perfectly.  He's still got it in him if he was able to take his team all the way to the Cup final.  I'd say 2yrs @ $5mil/yr

Meh who knows.  I'm dismissing him cause he's 40 and I saw him let in some weak, WEAK goals this past season, but perhaps he'd be motivated by New Jersey not bringing him back after all he's done for them.  If he still has a compete fire he'll want to play at the highest possible level to prove he still can.

I'm all in for signing Marty for 2 yrs (who wouldn't be).

I still think it would have to be a pretty healthy contract for the Leafs to dish out. I guessing 5-6 mil per season, but it wouldn't be anything close to what Luongo's contract amounts to, so if he does become a free agent I'm sure Burkes all over it.

It's an infinitely better option than Luongo

Absolutely. No talent cost to acquire, contract terms aren't/shouldn't be stupid. The only place the Leafs would want to be careful is around signing him for multiple years due to cap implications for 35+ year old...

I wonder what type of term he's looking for?  2 years + option?  He's not getting any younger.

I wouldn't be surprised if he went all Sundin and wanted 1yr deals so he had a choice after each season whether he wants to retire or not.

That certainly makes the most sense for both parties moving forward.

No options are allowed under the CBA, so it will have to be for a definite number of years. My gut says he'll be looking for a 1 year deal, but will want it to be for a substantial amount. For a goalie of his stature that would be what...5-6M for the year?

He was making $5.2mil this past season so it shouldn't be much more than that.  I wouldn't be surprised if he was ok with less.

If he can demand more why wouldn't he? I'm guessing upwards of six mi per, minimum.

I'd have no problem if Burke threw a big-monied, two-year deal towards Brodeur.  :-X

I might also consider a third (with a slightly lesser hit) and resign myself that I'd likely be throwing that 3rd year away. Basically;

Say, 6.25 / 5 / 3.75 (5 mil AAV.)

Year 1: He's our starter
Year 2: Hopefully someone emerges and he's our 1B at most.
Year 3: Probably retired and we eat the hit.

Edit: Who knows, maybe the new CBA will allow for something on that 3rd year?

They should go after Jonathan Bernier since he has asked to be traded.

When did he ask for a trade?  There's no news on that.  It was just speculated that they should trade him.
