Yikes.

Give Parenteau and Spaling 1st line and 1st PP minutes for the whole season until approximately March 1st  ;)

Wow, that's one of the worst teams I've seen in a long time.  Well done!!  :D  Is this an Auston Matthews capable roster?  Perhaps.

What does the future hold?

    Marner  C.Brown
    Nylander Kapanen
JVR Holland  Kadri
Bailey Gauthier Komarov

Rielly    Gartner
Harrington Dermott
Granberg  Valiev

I tell you, it's a pretty good sign of how checked out I was at the end of the season that I saw some of these prospective line-ups and thought "Who the hell is Bailey?"

I don't know that much about Harrington, but he's 22 years old with 2 professional seasons under his belt. If the Leafs liked him enough to get him in the Kessel deal I would imagine it's getting pretty close to him playing in the NHL. Not sure how that would work though with Phaneuf, Gardiner, Rielly, Marincin, and Hunwick all being lefties as well. Assuming no one gets traded I would probably move Phaneuf and Rielly over to the right side and do something like this:

Gardiner-Phaneuf
Marincin-Rielly
Harrington-Polak
Hunwick-Robidas

If Phaneuf goes then Polak bumps up to the Gardiner pairing and Robidas plays with Harrington.

Although I haven't seen it mentioned, Polak has got to be near the top of the "those likely to be traded before March 1" list, no?

Oh, absolutely.  He's not a part of the future and he's the right kind of depth defenseman that teams look for heading into the postseason...can play on the PK and while not a dominant defensive player is certainly someone who plays a physical game that can help wear out offensive minded teams.

Definitely, but I'd imagine that he'll be a Leaf until then.

So, I wonder if Chris Stewart would do one of those 1 yr. deals?

That's a great question!
Flip him for a second at deadline time... sounds good to me. Zero risk. This brings up a good point, Leafs should be targeting reclamation projects for the sole purpose of flipping at deadline time. Hodgson would have been a good candidate.

Yeah, lose Phaneuf and Bozak from there and, wow.... pain.
Bozak combined with Kessel gone really changes the core... I hope he's gone too. Reminds me a little of Stajan, I was just ready to move on ever though he was a decent player. I just don't/didn't like either guy representing the Leafs.

A lot of you guys know more about the Marlies than I do, but here is a proposed team makeup...seems a fair few defensemen there, and I didn't include a Donaghey (mainly because I have no idea who he is).

Are some of these guys not playing in the 'A' this year?

Leivo - Hyman - Nylander
Kapanen - Verhaegue - Brown
Leipsik - Gauthier - Soshnikov
Carrick - Rupert - Devane

Frattin,

Percy - Finn
Loov - Valiev
Nilsson - Brennen
Finn - Harrington - Granberg

Gibson
Bibeau
Sparks

Byron Froese should be in the mix too. He centred Frattin and Nylander in the back half of the season and catalyzed their playoff push.

I was trying to put together some kind of Marlies depth chart too. It's obviously pretty difficult since we have no idea which of these guys could be on the Leafs or not. This was the depth chart I put together (shown as lines just for convenience):

Leivo-Nylander-Brown
Leipsic-Froese-Kapanen
Soshnikov-Gauthier-Frattin
Hyman-Verhaeghe-Bailey
Rupert-Rupert-Carrick-Devane

There's likely a few other guys on AHL contracts that I might be missing. But as herman says Froese is one who has definitely earned a place on that roster.

Now, those are all of the non-legit NHL forwards that the Leafs have signed. Toronto currently has 11 legit NHL forwards on the roster, so there's room for 2-3 more on the team. Assuming the Leafs keep some of the younger guys in the AHL for another year the candidates for those spots will probably be Frattin, Leivo, Hyman, and Bailey. Depending on how much room there is on the team I would expect Devane to go up and down from the ECHL. In fact that Leafs have talked quite a bit about wanting to see their ECHL team more in developing players so I would actually expect them to send a Carter Verhaeghe and maybe even Gauthier down there for stretches as well. Especially Verhaeghe, since he'll likely be in tough to get many minutes on the Marlies with the depth that they have.
