Is Burke going to make an offer to Semin, I for one hope so .I think he would be a big addition to our top sx.

There's no doubt that Semin ::) has skill, but I'm fairly certain due to his lack of intangibles such as heart, grit, character, motivation, etc. Burke will have zero interest in him.

All jokes aside.. .ahem...

This guy has some of the better stats of anyone in the last several years yet there are no takers throwing money at him like Parise and Suter? Must be a reason.  According to the mega stat geeks I talk to he has better advanced stats than Ovechkin.  I will take their word for it on that one, but clearly this guy is such a concern outside of his point production that not even one team seems eager to lock up what should be a legit 1st line winger.

I personally spoke with Semin within the last week and he told me that he doesn't yet know where he will play next season. He also has no timeline set to make that decision.

Back in February after the trade deadline, sources close to Semin told me he'd take his time to sign because he wanted to better understand where everything was headed with the CBA.

Another obstacle to Semin signing with an NHL team was removed last week: Zach Parise, who ended up with the Minnesota Wild on a 13-year contract. Gandler told me it was fair to say more clubs would be active trying to sign Semin after both Parise and Ryan Suter signed.

I believe the Detroit Red Wings made a least a couple of inquiries regarding Semin, who has 197 goals in 469 career games.

Semin is mostly looking for a longer term, I believe. Gandler also told me Semin's priority is the NHL, by far ? despite what the KHL might be offering.

Well, the immediate and obvious one is that he's got 12 points in his last 30 playoff games.

The "must be a reason" part was sarcasm.  The issues with him are pretty clear by now, hence the reason no team has bit on a huge contract for a guy with lovely looking regular season numbers.

Here's a write up about it

I can't vouch for every word in the article/blog post but the gist of it isn't far off. I grabbed the first one that was roughly close to save me typing. He has wonderful scoring skills as a sniper but he's been a problem for a number of years. I've followed him since he was drafted as he was effectively part of the Ouellet - Oates deal as an upgraded pick.

The Leafs have enough light weights in their top six - some not as skilled as Semin. But they need some beef there. I'd pass to the extent that I wouldn't consider him back when I first scoured the UFA list. As some have rightfully pointed out above, there's a reason teams are not falling over each other trying to sign him.

Some NHL team may well sign him to a shorter term deal if he doesn't jump to the KHL. But as others have also said above, the concerns about his character and heart, disappearing during physical games, lack of defense,  etc would turn off Burke's interest quickly.

Interesting, CW..

I really do believe the Leafs are still kind of light in the leadership dept so to take up a key role with a guy who isn't exactly known for it is not going to move this team forward. That isn't to say that the Leafs have a bunch of "cancers" in the room, just not many guys who stand up and say what needs to be said at critical times.  A young team is like that though I guess.

Probably why they are talking to Doan.  Burke said he wanted to get Phaneuf some help in the leadership of the team at the end of last year but I haven't seen or heard much since about it.  Can't imagine Phaneuf's voice being the only one heard all the time in the room is going to not cause some issues at some point.

Mods, please, correct the g/d spelling in the thread title.

nutman: Learn to spell correctly.  Run a spellchecker.  Look up the spelling of the guy's name.  Learn the difference between "their," "there," and "they're."  It's not freaking rocket science.

amen to this part though :)

It would take big balls to blow the wad on Semen.  Massaging this young gun into the lineup might provide a few fireworks, but in the end I think it would be a mess.
