Shane Doan

It was just said on TSN.ca that he will be testing free agent waters on July 1 due to ownership instability.  Since burke said he wants size and doesn't want long term contracts (which rule out the best UFA's) maybe this guy is one he can get on a 2 or 3 year deal. I think between 2-3 million should be enough and he is physical and can play within the top 6.  If you bury Armstrong in the minors this guy would replace him.  He could also provide some leadership.  What does the Leaf Nation think?

Bill Watters said on his twitter account that he wouldn't be surprised to see Doan and Prust both signed, and that the Leafs have targeted them in the past.

Obviously, the source is weak, but those two would make this much closer to a Burke/Carlyle team. Two-three bodies would have to be moved out though to make room.

Maybe Watters is on to something but it sounds more like one of his setups to criticize Burke when Doan goes elsewhere.

I think Doan stays on the left coast.  My bet is San Jose.  I would have said Calgary but I don't think he's old enough to play there yet.

I'd say Anaheim and LA might be the front runners, as they're geographically closest to Phoenix. If he doesn't want to move his family (which is one of the reasons he's stayed with the Coyotes for so long), that seems like the easiest way for him to stay close.

I wouldn't even be surprised if he waited into August to see what happens with the Phoenix situation. It's clear that he would prefer to re-sign there. But if he doesn't then yeah it will most likely be somewhere closer to home.

So, what, we sign Doan and trade Kulemin? How will Doan fit in the line-up, because the kids like Kadri and Frattin have to be given a chance at some point soon. I really believe that Kadri needs and extended look on the big club to see where he fits in.

I've admired and respected this guy his entire career. He's probably a little underrated - or that's my perception of it. He's played physically hard year after year and been great for Phoenix. But he's due to break down if he hasn't shown some cracks already. As much as I like him, I'd stay clear. Doan has lasted longer than I expected he could with all that banging. He's 35 with about 40 years of wear.

It'll have to be a pretty big shakeup if Burke signs anymore forwards this summer. We have too many forwards vying for too few available spots.

Personally I wonder if Burke isn't after Whitney and not Doan.

Doan would add a nice element of leadership but as it's been said his game at his age is due to come crashing down at some point.

Whitney however seems to be everlasting and wherever he goes, the team seems to succeed along with him.

What to you think about Brandon Prust? Crazy Bill tweeted this morning that the Leafs have had an interest in him for some time as well.

Even if they don't sign Doan or another forward for that matter, there needs to be some moves among the Leafs forwards. Not including Kadri, there are 14 Leaf forwards under contract or qualified. Obviously some will be waived (Orr, maybe Armstrong?), but there's more that needs to be done to get folks into roles where they'll fit.

If the goal is adding grit and some skill to the forward ranks, and leadership to the overall team, you could do a lot worse than Doan.

I don't want to imply that Doan isn't a good player, but he is on the 17th hole I think. Kessel has the top RW position locked down, Kulemin plays both sides, but mostly RW on the 2nd line.
Burke would have to move McArthur, Connolly and Lombardi before I would consider Doan and I'd much rather sign the other player in that rumour this morning, Prust.

Either way, I don't think it will be happening with Doan.

He caught my eye during this years playoffs. He's a crafty player with and without the puck.

Signing him would surprise me though. Carlyle's style needs more toughness in the roster. Whitney doesn't add that.

I think the Kings might be where he ends up.

Penner probably leaving opens up room for him, good team, close to Arizona.

Doan would make a ton of sense.  We need exactly what he brings.  Size, skill, leadership, heart and he would still be our most physical forward.  I think his presence alone would help the team (and young guys) immensely.  Remember Gary Roberts?  Well this is essentially the exact same thing.

But the original poster is wrong... $2-3 million won't do it.  He will get his 3-4 years at $5M from someone.  If he signs any less it's with a contender he thinks he can win a cup with (ie 2 years in Pitts for $4m per).

I agree with you on the salary, but not on the length. If Doan signs outside of the Phoenix-area I think it will be a 1 or 2 year deal before he retires.

Back to the Watters tweet (which is nonsense), but yes certainly Doan and Prust would be huge for the Leafs.  I put Doan at slim to no chance in signing here though.  Prust though.... gimme gimme gimme.  Hopefully Burke can get him a contract that makes sense.  Perfect, perfect guy for the blue and white.
