SUSPENSIONS

Did Shanahan put out a video on why Neil was not suspended? Or do he only put out videos when a suspension is handed down? If they are going to do this video thing, which is a good idea. I think it should be for ALL videos under reviewing, including the ones where he chooses not to suspend. It's just as important to understand the rationale as to why not as it is to explain why.
Further is there a topic devoted specifically to suspensions. I searched and didn't find one. If there is, this post could be move.

I don't think it's realistic to expect videos for incidents where there are no actions taken. The point of the videos are to explain the suspensions.

IF Shanahan was going to do a video for every hit someone doesn't like, he'd be doing a dozen a day.

An in between might be if he did a once a week "answer the questions of the fans" type thing on why some things were suspensions and why some other things weren't.  Show the difference between "good contact" and "bad contact". I think sometimes the focus falls too much on the negative elements of the game and solid plays aren't given enough attention relative to ugly incidents.

Does anybody have any predictions on the maximum number of concurrent suspensions some team might face at some point this season. Given the frequency of suspensions thus far, I think it's almost inevitable that at least one team will lose two players at some point.  Is it conceivable a team could have the misfortune to lose three at one time?

I think they just mean a video for every hit that is made public it is being 'reviewed', because not all reviewed plays result in a suspension.

I posted this elsewhere, but I'll post it here again:

The suspensions meted out by Shanahan have collectively totalled 31 games and $700,000 in lost salary.

And here you have it - Shanahan's explanation video for why he didn't suspend Malone.

In other words, Malone's opponent, in this case, Chris Campoli, put himself "in a vulnerable position prior to the hit"....

I see, I see.  But, really, what choice did Campoli have?  Was he supposed to duck?  Safe to say then, that Campoli wasn't obviously prepared or preparing himself in advance for Malone's hit.  One could tell from afar that Malone was aiming to hit someone.  If this is what Shanahan means....  somehow, many of us still don't get it...

.... I would say compared to the MacArthur hit on Abdelkader, which was more of a brush to the shoulder/head.  Hardly anything in comparison to Malone's.

His agent is not pleased:

“@FriedgeHNIC: Pierre Marc-Bouchard's agent (@walsha) blasted his client's suspension today, calling it a "shameful farce" and referring to the system...”

“@FriedgeHNIC: as "kangaroo courts." Also called for an independent body to handle supplementary discipline. Full comments to come, waiting for NHL reax.”

Shanahan on the Bouchard suspension:

Agree totally.  Bouchard gave out what Shanahan calls an "illegal stick to the head", plus, some would say, a 'deliberate' "attempt to injure",  According to Bouchard, he had no 'deliberate' intention to injure, it only looked that way, but, it still falls under that context since Calvert's face sported a bloodied cut.

Should dissuade players from irresponsibly using the lumber on an opponent's face.

No problem with that one.  Intentional or not, he "snap slashed" him in the face and he started with the stick up around his shoulders.  Where did he expect to hit him if he wasn't going for the upper body.

Also, he's showing a video of "good hits".  That's exactly what I wanted to see Shanahan do to not just make his videos a negative thing.  That's great.

Yeah, 2 games seems about right for that. Maybe even on the lighter side of what I might have gone with. Just a completely unnecessary action by PMB.

I don't have a problem with any of the decisions Shanahan has made but I am starting to think that an independent discipline process, or at least appeals process, is probably necessary.

How would an appeals process work? Won't it just turn into the NHL vs the NHLPA? You get players appealing penalties on the ice all the time, it doesn't change the outcome of the call.
