The Ashes

This is the big English TV for the next few months. Is anyone following it?

This is the England v Australia cricket series which consists of 5 test matches in Blighty. The winning trophy is a replica of a small urn that historically contained ashes from the first ever series around 130 years ago, hence the name.

Lunch on day 2 of the first test. Aussies 229 for 9, a lead of 14, after they were 117 for 9.

Got to get this last Aussie wicket pretty sharpish.

112 runs on one wicket?

Yep. The LAST wicket too, which should be easy to get. Aussies finally out for 280 - their number 11 batsman was out for 98 on debut.

THis is cricket right? I never really got into the sport but have always had an interest in it, in high school we did a few classes on playing the game. It isn't televised anywhere in Canada is it? Sportsnet maybe?

That's quite impressive brings the lead to 65?

How do England's batsmen compare to Australia?

Yep, it's the holy grail of cricket. We have an immense rivalry between our two countries.
Not sure to be honest. I'm watching it on Sky Sports in England and I'm sure there would be an international feed.

I've seen it on Sportsnet previously as well as the Score I believe. I'm sure Sportsnet International or World or whatever it's called would carry it.

We have the better batsmen on paper - but as the saying goes, cricket is played on grass not paper ;) plus our bowlers are better than theirs too. But you never know.

It's nice to say all of the above. For years the Aussies used to wallop us and we'd have to endure taunts from former players and resident Aussies. Usually the series weren't even close. But we won the last two series to regain the ashes, including beating them down under.

And while typing the above we've lost two of our 11 wickets just before the tea break. So we are still 54 runs behind with two down.

The only saving grace is that the pitch will deteriorate as the match goes on and the Aussies will have to bat last on it.

Close of day 3 yesterday...England 326 for 6 at the close, leading by 261.

Should be just about enough runs on the board already but it is going to be extremely hot today (day 4) so we will want to keep the Aussie bowlers toiling in the field as long as possible. Ideally take the lead up to 350 then probably declare halfway through the afternoon session assuming we are not all out before.

First test result - England beat Australia by 14 runs shortly after lunch.

Once again the last wicket Aussie pair nearly came through for them with a partnership of over 80 runs that brought them so close to victory. Next test starts on Thursday at Lord's, the home of cricket.

Day 1 of the second test starts in 40 minutes. Just waiting for the toss. Whoever wins will want to bat first.

Edit : Australia call the toss incorrectly. England choose to bat. The game starts at 1115 so that the Queen can meet the players before the start!

Well we easily SMASHED Australia in the second test. Third test starts tomorrow and we would win the series with a win and at least retain the Ashes with a draw. Old Trafford is usually a results pitch so I reckon England will win on day 4.

Cricket is my summer sport. I'm booked to head out and watch some of the Ireland games then the Quarter Final and Semi Final of the World Cup in Australia next year. I've played the sport for 20+ years.

The Phil Hughes thing has had a real impact on me. Normally things like deaths of celebrities or sportsmen don't other than a thought of "Oh that's sad". But this one is very sickening. To be struck down playing a game in the prime of your life. Horrible.

I also feel very very sorry for the guy who bowled the ball that hit him. Simply doing what he's done 1000s of times and this time the outcome is just unbelievable.

So very sad.
