Since reading the arguments currently on other topics I thought I'd go with the Unofficial since we are all dreamers anyway.  Time at work so here goes.  Lets hear all your somewhat realistic dreams and wishes. This is BB last year if he doesnt get into the playoffs.

CAPGEEK.COM TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
(these totals are compiled without the bonus cushion)
SALARY CAP: $70,300,000; CAP PAYROLL: $66,426,667; BONUSES: $562,500
CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $3,873,333

This lineup to me would go deep into the playoffs next year.  It takes chemistry as much as anything

With Schenn gone, yeah... a Bryan Allen, stay-at-home, bottom pairing/7th defensman type guy might be a solid idea... Assuming Komisarek isn't him.

Steve Ott is reportedly available.

If Burke could dispose of Connolly or Lombardi, Ott would be a nice addition to the bottom six as a centre. Would fit well with what the Leafs are looking to add.

this is my ideal lineup as it stands right now...I do think it will be different come training camp.

lupul grabs kessel
JVR Colborne Kulemin
Frattin Lombardi Ashton
army steckel brown

gunner dion
franson gardiner
liles komi
holzer

Reimer
Scrivens
that leaves connelly, macarthur, bozak to get some trades done (maybe some picks in a really good draft next year?) and komarov can battle for any of the bottom 6 winger roles (preferably army)

I still like this idea, if the Leafs miss out on Schultz it will make some added sense too.

I look at what Florida did last year... if you can add the right mix of free agents that fit the style you want to play, you can completely bolster your team and start doing some damage.

I would suggest Burke is 1 vet goalie, 1 vet d-man and 1-2 vet forwards away from getting this team to the playoffs.  Let the kids mix in around those vets.  I'm not talking high end guys either.

Ott would slot in very nicely as the team's 3rd line.

Yeah, gotta do something about Lombardi though... Ott and Army 1.0 vs Army 2.0 could be a real pain in the book pair of book-ends.

To tell you the truth, if I were GM of the Leafs heading into this season and if I was making decisions based on what's best for the team in the long run (and not what's best to keep my job), I'd be inclined to do very little this offseason in terms of making a big trade or signing, and instead prepare for the next offseason, with a much better UFA class on the horizon.  This year I wouldn?t  mind just snagging a grinder for 3rd/4th line duty and a backup goalie on a 1 year deal.  If you could also ship Komisarek to a cap floor team, it wouldn?t hurt (his salary is lower than his cap hit for the next two years, but it depends on his no trade list).  Next year?s UFA market potentially includes Getzlaf, Perry, Mike Smith (will phoenix show him the money?), Scott Hartnell, Derek Roy, Ryan Clowe, Stephen Weiss,  Jonathan Quick, Jimmy Howard, Kari Lehtonnen among others. There are also Crosby and Staal, who I figure are locks to be signed by their respective teams, but you never know. Obviously a number of these guys will likely sign, but there are a couple of decent options to address our lack of depth at centre and goal.

I'd go into this season with:

Lupul - Bozak - Kessel
JVR - Connolly - Macarthur
Kulemin - Grabovski- Lombardi
Brown - Steckel - Armstrong

Liles - Phaneuf
Gardiner - Komisarek/Franson
Gunnarson - Holzer

Reimer
Journeyman Backup on a 1 year deal

Connolly, Macarthur, Lombardi, Steckel, Bozak and Lupul are all heading towards unrestricted free agency, while Komisarek will be heading into the last year of his deal.  If you give them enough playing time to build up their value, you could clean house at the deadline and turn most if not all of these players into draft picks (may not be high, but it?s nonetheless a decent stockpile of draftpicks).

We would surely miss the playoffs again, but it really is for just one more year and it wouldn?t be a bad thing to have a high draft pick in next year?s draft, which is expected to be solid (and if we played bad enough, we could end up with a top 2 pick and snag a guy like Nathan McKinnon or Seth Jones).  Moreover, we?d be heading into next year?s UFA market with lots of cap space.  Targeting Getzlaf and Perry wouldn?t be so far fetched in this scenario.  If you could snag these two guys and promote a few younger guys after another year with the Marlies, we?d have a very good team heading into 2013-2014 that?s well positioned to stay together for a few years:

JVR - Getzlaf  - Perry
Kulemin ? Grabovksi ? Kessel
(some combination of Kadri, Frattin, Colborne, Ashton and/or UFAs...of possibly move Kulemin to 3rd line and promote young guy to 2nd line winger)
Brown - UFA  - Komarov

Liles - Phaneuf
Gardiner - Franson
Gunnarson - Holzer
Blacker

Any of the UFAs mentioned above (although I'd actually lean towards Lehtonnen)
Reimer

If you could manage to keep Lupul in the mix instead of trading him, it wouldn?t be a bad thing (possibly in place of Kulemin). Just not sure what his salary demands will be (but i expect too high to keep him and also target the UFAs)

I just feel that any solutions this summer (overpaying for Parise or trading for Nash or Luongo) are either not addressing our deficiency at centre and/or will require us to give up good young talent for a bandaid solution.  As painful as it may be, I think toughing it out for one more year is the best way to ensure long term success for a number of years to follow, without stripping the cupboard  bare of our top prospects.

Not bad but there's no way JVR plays 3'rd line minutes and if - big IF - Parise is coming it won't be for $500k more than Grabovski.

You're assuming all birds are equal.  If you're holding a chicken in your hand, I'll take my chances and go after the eagles in the bush...with the hopes of snagging at least one of them.

Honestly wouldn't worry much about Lombardi. If you can dump him in another trade, then great, but otherwise let him come to camp and earn a job.  If he doesn't then waive him, bury him.

Ott would take a lot of heat off Grabbo so he can have a bit more focus on offense and less on shutdown and Steckel who I like but probably better suited to 4th line status.  Give the Leafs two really good faceoff men in the bottom six, plus Bozak wherever he lands.

So I'm in for Ott for sure, then Allen assuming nothing pans out with Suter.  Then slot in the kids and leftover pile of expensive vets we have where they fit in.

What about Brandon Prust?  Sather was saying on the weekend doesn't look good for re-signing him.

I like Prust but aren't we rather flush in the bottom six department?

Rosehill is UFA so I was thinking might be an upgrade over Rosehill.

Maybe... But with Connolly, Army, and Lombardi, I'd just like to see the cap dollars used  elsewhere. - This "best bottom six (well highest paid) ever" thing isn't really working out.

I think Burke is going to trade a few guys from the forward ranks. We may not get anything of note back, but the cap savings will be good for other things, like promotion for a few guys.

Outside of Armstrong, those guys don't really fit Burke/Carlyle's bottom 6 kind of players (well...supposedly anyways). If general team toughness is required, and Orr/Rosehill aren't options (please!) then picking up guys like Ott/Prust does make sense.
