Van Riemsdyk Being Mentioned

Bit of a rehash of past speculation but seems to make some decent sense.  Was also mentioned by Brad May on Hockey Central last night.

For me, I do this deal without much thought.

I like him too, but if we're going to trade Schenn I'd rather he's used in a package to bring in a guy like Getzlaf.

Might make sense for them given that Pronger is lost long term and they already have Luke's brother.  I would assume the boys would be happy to play together (although I always thought it would be Brayden coming to Toronto)

I forgot about putting the brothers together. - Might be some added incentive for the Flyers but still, part of me feel Schenn (Luke) isn't enough to get JVR. Would we not have to sweeten the pot some?

I'd prefer van Riemsdyk at 4.25 starting next season over Schenn currently at 3.6... Both are 89's and underachieving right now but I see van Riemsdyk as the better long-term player.

Second overall pick in 2007 but Vaan Riemsdyk only has 22 points on pace for about 44ish points on the season.  This is his third full season in the NHL which makes you wonder when is he going to break out as the player that he was drafted to be?

No, I just don't see the fit on that deal alone, the Leafs have plenty of wingers and JVR is heading into notable cap territory for a guy who hasn't done a whole lot.

Burke is looking to make the team better, if we take his word for it, with the playoffs in mind, JVR doesn't really say that to me.

Second overall pick in 2007 but Vaan Riemsdyk only has 22 points on pace for about 44ish points on the season.  This is his third full season in the NHL which makes you wonder when is he going to break out as the player that he was drafted to be?

If you prorate his stats to an 82 game season he's on pace for 50. It's still a valid point, but you can apply the same issue to Schenn. Fourth season in the league and isn't showing much in the way of progression.

Like I said, I like both players. I think JVR might hive a higher ceiling as a top 6 forward than Schenn does as a top 4 defenceman and that's why I do it. A deal like this though would most certainly have another winger moving on as you allude to.

I'd rather put a deal together for Brayden, than trade Luke out of town. Maybe it's that I like Luke and all, but part of it is that you don't normally trade a guy when his value is a bit lower than I think it should be. If JVR was having a better season, maybe, but not right now IMO.

Anaheim has been scouting the Leafs and the Marlies I think also, I think I read that somewhere. So a bigger deal in the Getzlaf territory would suit me a bit better than trading for JVR, and I like that player, have mentioned him before.

Sure, I can see that from an isolated perspective, they're both good hockey players kind of having so-so years but I just don't see Burke doing it unless there was something else really compelling involved in the deal.

Would I do it? Probably not, if you're going to trade Luke I'd like to think it would be in a package for a bigger trophy.
