John Tavares is still a Maple Leaf [4 years, $4.38mil AAV]

Okay, Jason Robertson.
I mentioned trading Knies for a top winger a while ago and was shot down for "don't trade the young guys". How about Knies+ for Jason Robertson?

The rationale would be that Knies is no longer going to be on a rookie deal and will be a much closer price to his value -- we'll see what the next contract is. But the guess is that we won't be benefitting much for the "young guy" boost. Also, taking our emotions out of it, is getting 30 goals when playing with Matthews and Marner really all that impressive?

Having said that, of course I would like to retain Knies. I would like to retain Cowan. But I think it is more important to be good in the next 3 years than good 4-6 years from now when all our stars are aging and our defense is so old it is dead.

2019-20 cap: 81.5M
Nylander, Tavares, Matthews cap %: 36.2%

2025-26 cap: 95.5M
Nylander, Tavares, Matthews cap %: 30.5%
The meta-point here is that the leafs got really lucky to get Matthews (and Nylander, Marner) but then got really unlucky that they were not able to benefit from a rising cap environment from 2020-2025 when the core-N were locked in.

The flat cap could have been the difference in all those playoff losses. As could 100 other things and various game 7 bounces.
