2025-26 Toronto Maple Leafs General Discussion

I’d just like to point out that this is why it’s not as easy as ‘get rid of the 11-13mil player and get 2-3 players instead’.

I’m not saying anyone here pushed for that (I don’t remember if anyone did) but I know that was all over talk radio for years.
Particularly when the GM could look at the upcoming UFA market and know, like the rest of us, that there was not likely to be much available. And the GM could also look at his low ranked prospect system and lowest rated scant collection of upcoming draft picks and know it would be very difficult to effectively replace the 11-13 mil player via trade.

I'm not a big fan of scratching Domi because I don't think they put him in a position to succeed in asking him to be a centreman. He's a good playmaker on the wing. I'd scratch Robertson with his 1 point in the last 2 weeks and he's not grinding like he was earlier in the season.
Absolutely not scratching Robertson for Domi. Just as you think Berube hasn't put Domi in a place to succeed, he did the same with Robertson by saddling him with Domi after he did very well when finally given a legit shot in the top 6. Domi has played 2 games on L1 and has looked terrible in each. Domi has 6pts so far this year...he hasn't been good enough. He needs to sit.

I don't look at point totals often, but I had absolutely no idea that Domi only had 6 points. Handed the keys to the kingdom and he's tripped walking through the door.

At 5-on-5 he's at just 3 points, while being outscored 8-20. He's unquestionably the single biggest anchor on the team right now.

Like I get Maccelli still has more to give but at 5-on-5 the Leafs are up 13-8 in goals with him on the ice, he's behind just Cowan and Tavares in xGF%, and he has a pretty respectable 2.01 points/60. Dude shouldn't be sitting over Domi.

Tied with Lorentz in points with Lorentz appearing in 6 fewer games.

We know he's not very good defensively (-13 overall for worst on the team by a large margin). But if he's not contributing offensively I'm not sure why you'd keep him on the roster. I wouldn't just scratch him for one game, i'd sit him up there for 4 or 5. And if he comes back and doesn't start contributing I'd send him to the minors in the hopes that someone claims him on waivers :)

It's startling that the bottom 6 players have continued to contribute so little despite the thought that it would be an improvement over years past.

McMann - 8pts in 23gms - 14:42 min/gm
Domi - 6pts in 23gms - 13:19 min/gm (1:28 pp toi)
Lorentz - 6pts in 17gms - 11:13 min/gm
Joshua - 5pts in 22gms - 12:20 min/gm
Jarnkrok - 4pts in 17gms (all goals, with three of them coming in the first 3 games of the season) 11:37 min/gm
Roy - 4pts in 20gms - 14:53 min/gm

BARF.

I don't know if there is anyone as dumb as Treliving. $3.75M for two more years after this one. That's a big yikes.

Who are the defensemen that they are playing with?

There will be a boatload of great Canadian players left off the team.

Seriously, pave your own way by doing next to nothing, but they cannot even do that.

Kind of thought Roy and McMann would be better. Not so surprised at the rest.

If Laughton was worth a 1st round pick, surely Roy could fetch one.

I actually do think a contender could overpay for him at the deadline.

MLHS has a big old article advocating for a coaching change before blowing it up. That's fine as far as it goes, but I do not blame Berube. This is his style, this is how he won the Cup, and this is what he was brought in to do. It's just not working, and it isn't going to with this lineup.

Lest we forget the many mistakes Dubas made, and the fact that the team won the division last year, and you could argue that Treliving at least deserves one coaching change. But I don't like his vision for the team, and I hate the style they play. I'm not much interested in seeing anything other than Treliving going first and letting the new guy make the coaching change.

I truly believe it’s the system.
I think I said this recently ... I'll try it a little differently.
Quinn used to look at the roster and design his system around the talent he had.
They would make personnel adjustments over the summer trying to address their shortcomings and then have his coaches adjust the system to the talent they now had.
The effort this season feels like "We're going to play Treliving-Berube hockey. Adjust your talent accordingly - except for Nylander (who doesn't play any system) until things go badly ..."
It feels like a square peg in a round hole system issue. Many of these players came up with or played in a different system for many years here.
I doubt that covers all of the issues but it certainly seems like a significant factor.
Some of these players can evolve and learn to play that way but that takes time.
