2025-26 General Trades & Signings

I thought they kiboshed Karlsson, Hertl, Barbashev trade rumours. I'd rather take Hertl than Roy (why not both) but Hertl has an NMC until July 1, and then it's a 3-team mNTC.
I don't take any denials coming out a GM's mouth at this time of the year completely seriously. Things move fast and change frequently. Not saying it will happen, but denials ring pretty hollow - especially from Vegas.

I don't fully understand the move from Vegas' perspective either.

Obviously they weren't going to be able to afford Hague (especially at that contract...woof) but this leaves them with 757K in cap space with 12F, 2G and 8D signed.

They will get the cap relief of Pietrangelo's 8.8M but that leaves them with 9.5M in cap space. If they want to sign Marner they are going to be right up against the cap if he signed for 12+ million and that's after trading Roy.

If Vegas trades Karlsson to the Leafs that would solve their cap problem.

Retention on Sissons makes sense... Vegas giving up a draft pick doesn't. It's almost like Hague's contract is being treated like a salary dump before it was even signed.

Puts Florida at around $5M in cap space to add a backup goalie, a couple forwards and a 7th D. Without moving salary out, they're basically out on the bigger names out there.

I was caught up in the Marchand fantasy like everyone else, but my rational side kept nagging me saying that contract is going to be such an anchor.

And seeing that now, I think it will be a terrible contract.

Marchand here would have gone down as either the best or worst contract the Leafs maybe ever signed. Given how things have gone recently I would have taken that risk. Just don't know what Plan B is now.
