2025 NHL Draft thread

Not a draft pick but Owen Conrad was considered by many one of the best undrafted prospects this year. He's an 18-year old defenceman from the QMJHL and you will not be shocked to learn that he's tall (6'3") and big (213 lbs).

From The Daily Faceoff:

Conrad is an athletic, strong defenseman who can move the puck and take space away. Conrad’s offense might not be a shining element of his game, but he’s playing with more aggressiveness than we’ve seen from him at other levels – and he’s dang good in his own zone. At the very least, Conrad will earn love for just how rugged he is. QMJHL attackers don’t seem to like to play against him.

The Athletic had him ranked 43rd in Corey Pronman's rankings and 61st in Scott Wheeler's.

What is the window to sign him before he goes into next year's draft as an overager?

Seems like a decent bet to give an ELC if possible, that can be deferred for a few years until he's ready for pro.

Why was he undrafted in that case?

I guess scouts are skeptical of QMJHL Defensemen in general, especially with middling production?

There were 19 draft picks out of the Q, and the 6 defensemen from that league were picked
3rd round 68, 4th round 122, 5th round 135 & 136, 6th round 172 & 177.

Two of them were picked from the same team (and same pairing)! 68 Will Reynolds and 135 Noah Laberge.

I wonder why he wasn't drafted? He's got the size, and was ranked as a 3rd round pick on a few draft boards. Seems odd that nobody took a flier on the guy with a late pick

Herman's point about scouts typically not loving the Q probably has at least something to do with it. Looking now it also seems like his team, the Charlottetown Islanders, isn't very good and seems shockingly bad at producing NHL talent over the past 10 years. Their NHL alumni list is here and their best NHLer, Ryan Graves, only spent like half a season there after his draft year.

Interesting, I thought they were still eligible as long as they didn't receive payment etc.
Nope. Any professional contract makes them ineligible. They have previously considered the CHL leagues to be professional, but the recent agreement between the two associations changes that moving forward (though, only for D1 schools).
