2025 Offseason Thread: Spring Cleaning

So with the Knies signing that leaves the Leafs at:

Forwards = 51.425M
Knies (7.75) - Matthews (13.25) - Nylander (11.5) = 32.5M
Domi (3.75) - Tavares (4.39) - Jarnkrok (2.1) = 10.24M
McMann (1.35) - Laughton (1.5) - Kampf (2.4) = 5.25M
Macceli (3.425) = 3.425M

Defense = 25.7M
Rielly (7.5) - Carlo (3.485)
McCabe (4.513) - Tanev (4.5)
OEL (3.5) - Benoit (1.35)
Myers (.85)

Goalies = 6.167M
Woll (3.667)
Stolarz (2.5)

Buried = 0.3M
Reaves (.2)
Benning (.1)

Cap Overage = 0.626M

Cap Space = 11.295M

Notable RFAs

Nick Robertson - qualifying offer 918,750 (Last deal 875,000)
Pontus Holmberg - qualifying offer 866,250 (Last deal 800,000)
Dennis Hildeby - qualifying offer 813,750 (Last deal 843,333)
Mikko Kokkonen - qualifying offer 813,750 (Last deal 846,667)

Notable UFAs
Max Pacioretty - last deal 1.5M
Matt Murray - last deal 875,000
Alex Steeves - last deal 775,000
Nick Abruzzese - last deal 775,000
Dakota Mermis - last deal 775,000
Steven Lorentz - last deal 775,000

This current lineup looks like it is missing 1 middle 6 winger and 11.295M should buy the space to fit that in. Even if the rumoured Marner rights for Roy goes ahead it would still be 11.7M. Guys like Lorentz, Holmberg, and Robertson are reasonable return candidates. I'm not against Patches coming back but that needs to be matched by moving out guys like Kampf/Jarnkrok.

Marchand and Mangiapane feel like the two leading bets there right now. I'd still like to get someone with size (and who knows how to play hockey) like Jeannot or Brazeau too for the 4th line.
Of the two, I'd prefer Brazeau. He doesn't appear to need an unsustainable shooting percentage to contribute - though, he doesn't provide as much of a physical impact as Jeannot. I'll take the extra depth offence/ability to move up in the lineup over the extra hits.

Jeannot would be my preference. A better skater and has PK experience (although only with Nashville). Brazeau probably comes cheaper though and is a right-handed shot which is a bit more of a need even on the 4th line. Would be fine with either really at the right price.

UFA bodies I'd take swings at for reasonable short term bets because Speed >> :
Andrew Mangiapane
Robby Fabbri
Anthony Mantha
Jonathan Drouin
Connor Brown
Joel Kiviranta

Someone who I very much did not exactly expect to be a speedster is Sean Kuraly. If the plan for Laughton is to have him somewhere in the top-9 I think he'd be a solid centre on a forechecking/banger line with guys like Jeannot/Brazeau/Lorentz/Tanev/Pacioretty.

Oh yeah, David Kampf replacement.

Totally agree. Very hard working player but way overrated for what he did here.
Hyman wanted $5M a season, hardly an outrageous amount. Edmonton offered him $5.5.

I don't see the $500\K as being beyond the Leafs salary structure.

The fact is that the Leafs refused to compete for Hyman because their crack medical staff -- the same guys that okayed the UFA defenceman from the Stars -- told them Hyman's surgically repaired knee would give out within three years.

Wrong agin, just like Joe S.

Little bit of a reminder that the Marlies also exist, and we'll likely be seeing a number of signings of players that are earmarked for that team.

The Marlies will need a lot of help at the top of their line-up. Especially if Steeves doesn't return (couldn't blame him if he wanted to see what else was out there). In particularly they're going to need to find players for Cowan to play with. As things stand the team doesn't really have anything resembling a AHL-level 1C.

The missing context is that the Leafs had only 7 forwards, 5 D and one NHL goalie signed going into that offseason, in a world where the cap wasn’t going up and up.

This does a good job of explaining it: https://www.pensionplanpuppets.com/toronto-maple-leafs-offseason-cap-space-free-agent-room/

I’m curious how people would have fit Hymab in (without knowing anything about how he’s performed in Edmonton) and filled out the remaining pieces.
