CHI
?Petr Mrazek will likely start for the Blackhawks
?This season for Chicago is of course all about Connor Bedard, who has 1 goal and 3 points in 3 games so far this season
?If you also thought "when did Marc-Edouard Vlasic get traded to Chicago", just know that is actually 22-year old Alex Vlasic playing on Chicago's top pairing
?Nikita Zaitsev is in year 7 of the 7-year deal he signed with Lou Lamoreillo back in 2017 and has been a healthy scratch with Chicago through 3 games so far this season

TOR
?Joseph Woll will make his first start of the season for the Leafs
?Keefe swapped Jarnkrok and Domi in the line-up during the 3rd period against Minnesota, and based off practice lines on Sunday that switch will carry over to this game as well

This will be a great one to see, that phenomenum kid with back to back Hatties x Mrazek and Bedard.

Go Leafs Go!!!

Can Auston perform the unthinkable and get a hattrick of hattricks?  Normally I'd say no, but with Mrazek in net, I mean...you never know?

Glad to see Hall is back. Excited to watch Bedard. Woll starting is a good thing.

Nylander's pending contract has him playing like he has 39 goals on game 82 of the season. I am kidding, he looks unbelievable out there, what a start for Nylander.

That fourth line seems made up.  I mean the 4th line left winger looks like the phonetic spelling of Tkachuk, and the centre seems to be a character from Lord of the Rings.

This is quite a change in tone from the first couple of games last year where Keefe was to be fired and Trotz was imminently getting hired.

Oh it can still and probably will happen. Leafs usually start slow and then in Nov get it going. So far the D is off a bit so we'll see how it goes.

Auston Matthews scoring at a 246 goal pace will do that.

My theory on this is down to the Leafs' offensive system: in years past, the Leafs played a very 'connected' style, with regroups and passing chains up and down the zones and pressing with numbers. The shift remarked in the prospect tournament and pre-season was the Leafs are going a bit more direct; just get the puck out, up, and get after it, rather than trying to wend through with 3+ guys making 6 passes. It will suit them better in playoff hockey when space is a premium and grunt work effort is the way to earn ice.

So this year, with Matthews fully healthy off the hop, and Nylander both highly capable of attacking nearly solo, the stars are still capitalizing off other teams' defensive miscues (early season be like that for everyone) even as their own linemates' passing/timing is scuffling.

As the season progresses and teams dial in their structure (and the prospects are loaned back), we'll see the star scoring taper off, but the defense tighten up. Goals will be harder earned, which means those third bananas start to get more open looks when their linemates are checked more tightly.

Everything was set up by effort (Bertuzzi net front, Brodie forecheck) to make space for two high end moves (Marner's pass, Matthews' shot). Most goals occur just a couple seconds after a zone entry.

Katchouk and Entwistle on Chicago.

They are sheltering Mrazek from us. Soderblom is being fed to the wolves tonight. Or the Leafs might just Leaf this up in the Leafiest way.
