Bobby Ryan available?

You gotta love these pre draft rumours, but this one was started by Bob McKenzie....

Darren Dreger also brought this up on the radio this morning.

I thought things had subsided on the Ryan front based on the way Anaheim finished off last season.  Nonetheless, I would have no problem if Burke goes after him.  Probably even moreso than Nash.

Yeah, Ryan is one of the potentially available forwards I'd give up the #5 plus for. Maybe Edmonton might like the #5 and #6 from Anaheim in a deal for the #1?

Ryan's a good player but, like Nash, he's someone who doesn't really address the team's needs.

Again with the Bobby Ryan rumours?  Sure i'd like to have him but at what cost?

If anything, less than Nash.

Sure but not what the Leafs need at all.  Still looking for a center, I'd rather waste trading assets to acquire a center as opposed to a winger.

I don't know that I'd be so quick to assume that. Ryan being available doesn't mean he's on sale necessarily and Anaheim has every incentive to get the most they possibly can for him. He might cost less than Nash because of what Howson's demanding but you're still likely to pay full price which would be pretty significant.

I agree.  Unless the Leafs feel they can convert him into a centre, a position he has played before.

The bolded was essentially what I meant.  It'll cost a lot to pry Ryan out of Anaheim.  But if there had to be a choice, I'd rather go with the assets we'd have to give up for Ryan than the boatload we'd have to surrender for Nash.

No, I got that. My point, I guess, was that it really might cost less for Ryan but it also might not. For a lot of the reasons that you'd go with Ryan over Nash(contract, age, etc) I'm sure a lot of NHL GM's might too and that could lead to a bidding war and so it goes.

If there's a lot of interest in Nash, and there seems to be, there could be even more in Ryan.

There is pretty much no chance the Leafs get Ryan.

I heard Pierre Mcguire on the Team1200 this morning.  He said that Ryan and Carlyle had a "terrible relationship."  He also said he even spoke to a couple Duck players yesterday regarding the Ryan rumours and what happened in Anaheim this year and the players said that Carlyle really didn't like Ryan.  I can't remember the exact words but if you listened to it, it was a pretty damning picture of the Ryan/Carlyle relationship.

Regardless, don't think it's very likely considering how bad their relationsip was.  Although, I guess Lupul and Carlyle wasn't great either but they seem to have put it behind them.

I'm sure Carlyle like Ryan just fine when he was scoring at a regular pace for him. Honestly, I don't buy into these "X player and Y coach don't like each other" except for in extreme situations. When it's something Leaf related coming from McGuire on an Ottawa based radio station, well, then I put absolutely no stock in it.

Pierre caters what he says to the market he is speaking to.  He jumps to all kinds of conclusions based on little information like any other media person.  He just happened to talk to two Ducks players within the 8 hours between when the rumor came out again and the interview?  BS. Did he have to reach out yesterday to find out there was some long standing issue? BS.  If it was really that bad of a relationship it would be household information to all by now and not Pierre finding out magically in the last 8 hours.

The man is a red nose away from looking just like how his schtick sounds: A clown show.

I think McGuire has a bit more class than some of you are giving him - he is pretty tight with a lot of players and its never been his MO to just make things up to glorify himself...he's not Dregger. I'll take his opinion over a baseless internet rumor all day long.

He's a well known flip-flopper who has a tendency so go on local radio and say a whole bunch of stuff their fans want to hear and then say completely different stuff the next day in another city.

I like Maguire as well, but he does taint some of the things that he says based on the market he is talking too.  He may hold information back, or spin it a certain way depending on who he is talking too.  I do not believe that he makes things up however.

He was doing a game about 4 years ago between the Rangers and the Pens.  Gomez high sticked Crosby, and Crosby flung his head back.  All three announcers said that Crosby was diving and that he had to get that out of his game and that he couldn't act like he was getting shot all the time.  They showed the replay, and Gomez's stick was actually in Crosby's mouth.  All three of the announcers kinda went "Hunh, would you look at that."  At the end of the game Maguire interviews Crosby, and the first thing he says is "On that play where Gomez highsticked you, I said you dove.  I'm sorry about that, I made a mistake."  I always thought that was a pretty stand up thing to do.  Most media types don't apologize for the things they say.

Anyone who makes $ off saying things like "kablam" is ok by me

Man, I wish the Leafs could draft someone like EK.  There lack of ability to draft elite talent confounds me.
