MTL
?Sam Montembeault will likely start for the Canadiens
?Montreal will try to improve from their bottom-5 finish in 23/24. That will of course be a lot more difficult after the tough loss of Patrick Laine for 2-3 months due to the knee injury he suffered against the Leafs in pre-season
?Lane Hutson, Montreal's small but dynamic top prospect, will begin his NHL rookie season in their top-4 alongside veteran David Savard

TOR
?Joseph Woll will likely start for the Maple Leafs
?A number of players will be making their debut in a Toronto jersey: Pacioretty, Lorentz, Tanev, and OEL
?Noteworthy of course that Pacioretty will be making his Leafs debut in Montreal where he spent the first 10 seasons of his career and was captain of the Canadiens for 3 seasons
?After somewhat disappointing training camps McMann and Liljegren are expected to watch game 1 from the press box

Dropping McMann seems political to me.  So many better combinations?

Stolarz might miss out on his hometown game as a result

Taking precautions is always the right path.

Totally had that inkling yesterday when Berube was coy about who was starting. There was some speculation on Kyper/Bourne that Woll could already be injured and they were right. I love Woll but my god he's made of glass.

I was so pumped for this game.
Did that ever let the air out of that balloon.
After all the summer chatter about his health ...
He's not even one of the 30 somethings ...

....

Go Leafs Go!!

Yikes, you just never know when he's going to be available. We need this guy to play!

Just had a vivid flashback to Samsonov frozen on that goal line for the game 7 OT goal to end last season... Woll a surprise scratch.

Thankful for Stolarz.

Unreal that Woll is already hurt.  This is the exact fear that everyone had going into the season with this guy as the #1

I don't have faith in Stolarz being a 50+ game starter but I absolutely have faith in him starting tonight.  I'm not worried but I really don't care to hear "the surgery fixed my problem" or "Strength and flexibility are going to keep me healthy" when it comes to goalies.  Woll is fragile.  I'm still leaning toward his extension being a good move (look at what the top goalies are asking for) but he's also a huge risk because he hasn't been able to show that he can stay healthy let alone handle a bigger load.

The Hockey News: Maple Leafs? Joseph Woll to Miss Season Opener Game With ?Lower-Body Tightness?, Dennis Hildeby Called Up to Back Up Anthony Stolarz
Six days ago (Oct 3), Woll appeared to be labouring on his left side after stopping a shot from Auston Matthews. The goaltender remained at practice and was visibly strained throughout the session.

There was a fair gap between his first game of preseason (Sept 22, 31 mins) and the last game Oct 5th (60 mins) - the 2 games he played in. He may have been nursing something through preseason.
