Capitals vs. Leafs - Dec. 18th, 7:00pm - SN

Early New Year's resolution - no more Leaf games for me until something changes. Tired of watching these guys just going through the motions.
My dad and my grandparents moved to the East Coast around 1951 from Toronto. I was born in the late 60s after the last Leafs Cup but my grandparents, dad, uncles, cousins all cheered for the Leafs. For the 1st time in my life I am considering changing teams. My youngest son and his wife are having their 1st child this winter and this 11th grandchild of mine already has Leafs pjs and he isn't even born yet.

How could a team with unlimited resources and such fan support be so badly run. I don't get it.

I remember being on this site back in the Sundin era with Cornflake, Canada79, Couchman and then with MiracleGro and others and it was never this bad. The worst thing is I actually don't think I care about the Leafs anymore now because of how bad the management has been since last July 2018.

- Signing Tavares to the $11,000,000 contract when the Cap was only $79.5 which doubled his salary simply because San Jose, Edmonton and Buffalo were being morons with their money was sickening to a team that was not ready yet to breakout.
- The Feb 2019 giving Matthews $11,639,000 was ridiculous for a player who never won anything and not making it for 8 years was unforgiveable.
- The insane amounts handed out to non-champion players meant a 1st round pick had to be traded to unload the veteran MArleau. That 1st rounder ended up being RW/RS Seth Jarvis who currently leads Carolina with 19 goals in 33 games and has thrown 42 hits for $7.4 Mil until 2032
- Leafs then approved Marner's contract when he hadn't won a single playoff round.

And every GM makes mistakes but Dubas makes asinine trades that even casual fans were concerned with like Marchment for Denis Malgin, protecting AHL dman Justin Holl over recently acquired McCann simply because Holl shot right, trading future assets for subpar players at TDL (Treliving might have out done Dubas at the last TDL)...

Man I am tired of Leafs management more than any of the players...

Just want to say that this post resonates with me. I understand where you are coming from. It's like we keep pouring time and money into this team, and it just seems to be this treadmill of despair. I feel like the only solution is for fans not to pour time and money into this team. It feels like cause and effect. The Leafs make a lot of money, so it removes the impetus from them having to do smart things. That's not to say that people don't care about winning. It just means that when push comes to shove, the Leafs probably have a little less motivation than other teams.

Also, can we stop the "Toronto burns through coaches" argument

In the Matthews era we have Babcock --> Keefe --> Berube

Florida - 5
Dallas - 6
Edmonton - 5
Boston - 5

For every Tampa, Carolina or Colorado with 1 coach, there are ample teams with multiple changes

I don’t think they’ve quit on him, which is actually part of the problem. They had a lot of these same issues last season, they were just getting better goaltending and had a more successful PP. This is the team trying to execute the coaching staff’s game plan.
I don't think the plan is to have a last place PP. I don't think the plan is to get rid of the puck at every moment. I don't think the plan is to halfheartedly backcheck. etc. etc.

Can we somehow convince Rielly to go away too while we're at it?
Been saying that for ages. NMC’s are bullshit.

Yep I agree said it multiple times and I'm sure some will argue but the contracts handed out to 16,88 and 34 were ridiculous. I would have traded Nylander when he held out but no they eventually gave him what he wanted. He should have been the one made example of saying we aren't going to cave in to your guy's demands. All overpaid in my opinion. Tavares you can argue because he was a free agent and it all boiled down to money which he would have gotten somewhere else. I saw the writing on the wall with this core from day one. None of them have what it takes to win playoff hockey and that should have been identified after a couple playoff seasons where they basically were no shows. That's when the core should have been dissected and we wouldn't be in this mess today.

I don’t think that it’s the plan, either. It’s just the reality of the systems they’ve tried to implement. Unless they quit on Berube early last season, it points to it being a systemic and confidence issue. You can plan all you want, but if you’re trying to fit square pegs into round holes or the plan is flawed, it’s not going to go well - and, with how long this has been going on….

How is Savard still the PP coach? Remember when he bit Tucker?
