Downloading music

My 16 yr old has actually been doing the responsible thing.  He's been purchasing music for his iPhone through iTunes.  He had a ton of music.

His iPhone was having issues with the home button.  He was advised by Apple to backup his iPhone 4 and bring it in and they'd replace it.  He did that.

So he gets home and we sync it from the backup in iTunes.  Problem is, it backed up his contacts, but failed to back up his music and apps.  We've searched everywhere in iTunes, but the stuff ain't there.  There's receipts showing his purchases, but no music (or apps).  He can redownload the apps, but you're not allowed to redownload the purchased music.  He phoned Apple, and they can't help him.

So, he's wondering if there's a decent download site to get tunes.  We used to use Limewire years ago - what do people use now?

I use frostwire. The only problem is sometimes it takes a few tries to get the actual song, as sometimes its just some dude telling me I wont an ipad haha

I mostly get my music from file sharing websites like Rapidshare, Fileserve, or Filesonic. You can usually find the links to them on google or on a music blog/site.

But to be honest, I'd try sending an e-mail to Apple. I've googled your problem and it is obviously a somewhat common thing. Most people are given an opportunity to re-download their music.

Yes, way faster than torrents, no uploading required.

Since I started with the filehosting sites, I've never used a torrent.

Really? I've found it's the opposite for me - I usually get 300+ kb/s from torrents but hover around 100 kb/s from fileshosting sites.

I typically get speeds closes to 4MB/sec, I do pay for a premium account though and use a download manager.

$5 a month for that type of speed is a no brainer for me, plus the bandwith and possible legal trouble saved with the uploading involved with torrents.

What file hosting account/service do you use? I'm honestly getting a little tired of torrents. Is the selection as good on the file hosting sites? Sorry for all the questions - just looking for alternatives.

If anyone has an android phone, there is an app called music junk that let's you download unlimited free music.

As long as you didn't wipe the drive or the account, it should (hopefully) still be there.  What I would do, is do a search for *.m4a files on your hard drive.  I'm running Vista on my one machine where I have all my music.  The directory where the music is at is the following:

C:\Users\<username>\Music\iTunes

Replace <username> with your login name.  Under that above directory, you'll see a directory for each album/artist.  In each one will be your .m4a file.  If you've been downloading the newer iTunes music, then it should be free from copy-protection or DRM as they call it.  So, you should be able to add it to your new iPhone.  But before you do that, I would copy/move the files that are there first to another location or backup location.  Because once you sync your new iPhone, it might try to wipe everything out (especially if you pick the wrong option when the questions pop-up after the 1st sync).  But you can always add these new files into your library afterwards.

The easiest way to copy all your .m4a files if you don't care about the directories is to open Windows Explorer and go to the iTunes directory above and in the search bar in Windows Explorer and type *.m4a.  It should list all the .m4a files underneath that directory.  At that point, you can highlight all of the files and copy and paste into a backup location.  Hope that helps.  Good luck!

Different problem here...my brothers laptop died...hard drive failure. Apple say that there is no way for him to push the more than 1200 photos from his phone, back down into a new installation of iTunes, and that he shouldn't try to sync it, as it'll wipe out his photos.

Anyone know of a tool/app that will let him download the entire contents of his iphone to his new laptop, without screwing it up?

I used this when I accidentally deleted all of the downloaded music from my daughters iTunes account (was still on her iPod Touch)

I have bought a couple of their products with varying degrees of success - but this one worked on getting the stuff off of the iPod back to the PC.

Hmmm, this sounds like a good solution.  He has a ton of friends who have their own band songs on Youtube - he could have those on his iPhone as well.  Anyone know of a well trusted site to do this?

I prefer a program called jdownloader, all you do it copy the link to the youtube page and it automatically recognizes it and you can choose to download the audio or the video.

That's the way I do it, although I have a different program. I download a lot of live-material and it goes very fast in mp4-format, then I use a mediaplayer to watch it on the tv.
