I?m listening to 32 thoughts and the impression I?m getting from Friedman is that pending a physical that this Murray deal is closer that it seems.

I?m wondering if Murray is it? Like would he be brought in as #1 goaltender himself or is there another move for a 1-A or 1-B type goalie ? Cap limitations may prove he?s it. I?m just a little skeptical about Murray being the final solution to our goaltending situation.

Even if the Leafs feel confident in Murray rebounding I think his injury history will mean they'll definitely look to add another goalie in addition to him. I think Eric Comrie would be a very intriguing UFA option, Stolarz or whichever one of Riemer/Hill the Sharks decides not to keep would be trade targets.

Dreger, Friedman, Weekes all basically saying the same thing here.

Maybe it's nostalgia, but I'd be comfortable with a Murray/Reimer combo.  Stolarz would be good too, but I don't see Anaheim trading him just yet - especially if they're shopping Gibson.

I'm assuming Gibson isn't going anywhere. Edmonton, Washington, and the Leafs would seem like the only landing spots for him and all 3 teams look like they're going with someone else. It might make more sense for Anaheim to move Stolarz later in the season though to a team that needs a midseason upgrade. Unless of course they want to join Chicago in the tank-off.

I was expecting this to be a joke, but it's a real thread with data and everything from a sens writer.

Unless Murray rediscovers the game he had in his first few years in Pittsburgh, I'm not convinced he's an upgrade. Of course, Campbell comes with similar questions (is he the Campbell we saw in 2021? 2022? Somewhere in between?).

Other than Kuemper, there aren't great obvious options out there. They're all sort of in the "he can be really good in the right situation/circumstances" types, and that's not the best group to be plucking from. If Murray ends up being the cheapest (both in terms of cap and acquisition cost) and performs similarly, then maybe it's the right move - but, there's a lot of ifs and maybes. Unless Dubas really feels he can't land Kuemper or Murray is being brought in with double retention, little to no cost (or, even, some sort of asset included - though, with double retention, that would be unlikely) as a 1B/platoon/backup, I don't think there's urgency to get this done.

So no more "soooooooooooooooouuuuuuuuuuuupppppppppppppp" chants, what does Murray get? "Maaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaatttttttttttttt"...i dunno

How about M&M?

As in claims it melts in your mouth but not your hands but really does exactly that and we are going to be underwhelmingly disappointed by this acquisition.  I'm completely content to be proven wrong come the season but I think this is going to blow up horribly if Matt Murray is our starting goaltender.

I expected Dubas to get creative but I'm really not thrilled that we are hoping for rebounds from a guy who even at 50% retained isn't exactly cheap.

Jack Campbell: 30, we like him, really good when healthy, can't stay healthy, going to be expensive with term
Petr Mrazek: 30, really good when healthy, can't stay healthy, was expensive for his role as backup
Matt Murray: 28, really good when healthy, can't stay healthy, is expensive unless there is double retention, has Cup wins awhile ago backstopping a d-corps that headlined Ron Hainsey

Let's also add:
Freddie Andersen: 32, really steady when healthy, couldn't stay healthy, expensive

Joseph Woll: 23, shown flashes of good when healthy, hasn't been healthy
Ian Scott: 23, show flashes of good when healthy, hasn't been healthy

Michael Hutchinson: 32, not good, generally healthy

I?m kind of with LK on this. Obviously as a leafs fan I want this to work but almost every aspect of this looks like Mrazek 2.0.

But I will not change my mind that 5 years at almost any significant amount is nuts for Campbell.

There's scenarios where we get Matt Murray and I'm content with our goaltending and scenarios where we get him and I'm not. We need retention, we need an asset coming back our way, and most importantly we need another capable goalie lined up to platoon with him. If we check those boxes I think we'll have done ok. I'd still have preferred a Campbell or Kuemper signing but if another team is willing to pay them more then there's not much to be done there.

If we get him for 50% retained but don't get a sweetener attached and Kallgren and Woll are battling for the back-up spot in training camp then I'll definitely think we should have looked at other options.

That's effectively my perspective on it. I think the ideal situation would be signing Campbell to a team friendly deal and then going out and looking for a quality-ish second option but even in that scenario how would we grade our goaltending? There's obviously a difference between the best option and worst but I think people are slightly exaggerating the spread between them. Another year of hoping Campbell will be good enough while signed to a big time contract isn't exactly Potvin-Puppa.
