Luongo

I can't believe (or maybe I can) the moronic talk in the media about the Leafs going completely desperate to get Luongo.
Granted he's a top goalie, but...

1) Has that burdensome contract
2) Is quickly moving out of his prime
3) Would send a pretty negative signal to all the young goalies in the Leafs system
4) If he doesn't pan out, who is going to take an even older and declining Luongo contract off the Leafs?

If the price was cheap, I might consider it. But to hear these guys on Sportsnet Tim and Sid talk, I don't get it.

Gardiner and Schenn gone, Gillis is just able to pick up whoever he wants. Can you grasp such non-sense.

I cannot for a minute think that Burke is that stupid or that desperate. He'll find another way to get something done.

All the media can harp on about is that Thomas Vokoun is the only available option. "Who else out there is available?" They drone on...

Anybody can be available for the right price, unless they have a no trade clause. Burke and Nonis have made it clear their preference to improve is via trade and that could include a number of goalies they are inquiring about.

I'd love to see the Scheneider/Luongo thing drag on and give them some real headaches. The price will come down, but I still think the Leafs look elsewhere to resolve their goaltending.

If the Leafs could snag Luongo for a song, I'd be all for it. And, I literally mean a song. Perhaps something by Nicki Minaj. You know, something that doesn't have a lot of value.

I had been in favour of trading for Luongo, provided the cost was low.  Now, I am not so sure I would risk taking on his contract at any cost.

I agree with the earlier comment that there will be lots of other options.  The former general managers who now make their living giving free advice on TV, would never have suggested a year ago that a GM should:

a)  Sign Brian Elliot; he will lead the league in GAA.
b)  Or sign Mike Smith; he will take his team to the semi-finals.
c)  Or avoid Bryzgalov; he will demand a monster contract and perform well below the league average.

I would prefer to find a veteran goalie that can be a solid stop gap for the time it takes for Reimer or Scrivens to develop into a starter.

I've said it before and I'll say it again, democracy doesn't work.

Also, if Luongo ends up a Leaf, whatever the cost, I predict fans will fall in love with him by about 10 games in, as he provides the type of goaltending we don't remember even exists since we're so far removed from the days where our goalies weren't completely incompetent.

Not to mention Luongo has always been a guy who thrives and seems to play better the more rubber he sees. It's reminiscent of how Cujo left the run-and-gun Leafs and didn't know what to do with himself for half the game when he joined the smothering Red Wings.

I'm not saying I'm blindly advocating a trade for Luongo, nor am I saying he'll make the team instant Cup contenders (although add a solid centreman like Duchene or Stastny and maybe we're onto something ...) ? I'm just saying I'm confident some fans who would have taken bullets supporting the mediocre likes of Raycroft or Gustavsson will begin using way too much hair gel and will start shouting "Looouuuu!" or a Jim Hughson-esque "ROBERTO!" before November.

Luongo usually has a slow start to the season.  He may be Boo'ed more than Lou'ed early on and that may hurt his confidence for the entire season.

Just say 'No' to Luongo and his horrid contract.

I remember when the Leafs first got Belfour. He had such a slow start he was being bashed by everyone. Then, low and behold he started to stop the puck, and won back all the naysayers in short order.

All too true, except that if he had continued to falter, we weren't stuck with him for 9 more years.

I get the impact Luongo would probably have, and I like it when I picture it, but the risk is sooooooooooooooo enormous due to the contract I just can't get my head around it. If he's wallowing around in 6-7 years, who cares.. but if in 2-3 years he can't hack it, it's going to get ugly.

But in the interest of solving the starting goalie problem once and for all for at least the next 3-4 years, I kind of feel like just giving in and saying fine just trade for the guy and be done with it. Let's see what happens.

Burke can immediately trade Reimer , get that nice return he supposedly " immediately turned down" and go with Scrivens as the backup.

Belfour didn't have a slow start at all.  He had a shutout in his first ever game as a Leaf.  The "slow start" was pre-season when the games don't count.  Toronto fans are so on edge they started to get on his back during the pre-season.

Apparently, some guy on Twitter who broke both the Hodgson trade and the Booth trade before the media is saying Luongo to Toronto by the draft if not July 1, and is a done deal.

Probably not true but fun to think about nonetheless.

But you have to be realistic about what that price is. Carolina isn't going to trade Cam Ward unless they're convinced that the return they'd get would make them a better team. Jim Rutherford is smart enough, as are most GMs, to know that his team won't be as good as they are with their current starting goalie unless they get goaltending that is at least as good as their current goalie provides.

That's the catch 22 that makes just about any #1 goalie in the NHL prohibitively expensive, or in some cases downright impossible, to trade for. The reason Luongo is attractive is because his team is motivated to move him so that you can get him for less, maybe substantially less, then the value he'd provide to the Canucks.

The reality is that there are going to be very, very few options for the Leafs to add a #1 goalie without making a substantial trade of their young assets. If there's one thing Burke has established beyond a shadow of a doubt in his time here it's that he can't work miracles and adding a goalie will cost heavily unless the team is a motivated seller and, as we've found out with Phaneuf, teams that are motivated sellers are usually motivated for a reason.

I'm not sure if I'd trade for Luongo but I understand the appeal.

Well, if they have Schneider locked up to a long-term deal by then, I suppose it's a possibility, but if not, there's no way Luongo is moved at that point. Though, really, this is most likely a case of linking Luongo with the most high profile team that's looking for a goalie and hoping for the best.

So you're doubting some guy?
