Marlies Talk 14/15 | aka What's Nylander up to?

The Marlies announced their training camp roster, which opens today:

The one name that stands out is Blake Kessel, Phil's brother. He's a training camp invite, battling for an AHL contract. I didn't realize that he actually played for Orlando in the ECHL for much of last season. Even if the Marlies do sign him I'd imagine he'll end up back there until injuries hit.

He was in the Philly organization last season, was he not?

I like the guys attitude, he paid 600K of his own dosh to buy himself out of the KHL. Nonis said he was playing injured and a step behind in his few games.  Lets hope he comes back when we need him and makes a difference. Would be a nice story.

think down the road 4 years, when 5 of our 7 defensemen may be Swedes
I think Loov is on the fast track for sure.

Blake Kessel has indeed made the cut and will play for the Marlies this season. Brother Phil should be happy to have his brother living in town and playing just down the road...

I dont know how much game time he will get, he is one of 8 d on the roster and Percy has still to be added to the mix when Franson returns.

He does appear to be one of the more offensive minded d which might help his case as they try to replace Brennans production.

If Percy does go down to the Marlies, that would leave the Leafs with 6 dmen on the roster so one of the others (Holzer?) would be likely to get called up.

But right now, they've got 10 dmen:
Andrew MacWilliam
Brendan Mikkelson
Korbinian Holzer
Matt Finn
Petter Granberg
Tom Nilsson
Kevin Marshall
Eric Knodel
Viktor Loov
Blake Kessel

Finn is hurt. Most of them are defensive dmen so Kessel could well stay on the Marlies. Probably at least one will go to the ECHL.

This is the most physical Marlies team I think I've ever seen. They're stacked with muscle (probably due to Brian Burke). They're not as deep with top 6 skill or offensive D.

In Marlieville, looks like neither Orr or McLaren will be in the starting lineup for Saturday's 3 p.m. season opener @ Ricoh vs. Utica.

They've got to keep Bodie sharp. And they have Biggs, Broll, Devane and Ross to sort through - who are not top 6 wingers.
