Owen Nolan was released by the Vancouver Canucks.

I was hoping that he'd catch on, and finish his career in the NHL, rather than the Swiss League.  He never gave Leaf fans what we thought we were getting, but I always liked the guy.

I don't think he fits in here - goes against what the team has done recently.  Any teams out there that could use a veteran 4th line leadership guy?  He's been a captain, won a gold medal, fought back from injury after injury.  He must bring something.

Why would one boo Nolan? Because injuries halted what was supposed to be a great acquisition? I loved the trade at the time and would do it again in a heartbeat. Just dumb luck things worked out the way they did really.

That whole trying to get the team to pay his salary during the lockout thing.

Yup.

It could have been great, but it's certainly not his fault it wasn't.

Call me silly but I might have tried that too. In fact, I might have tried every trick or loophole out there and moreover, if I could afford it, I might have even seeked legal counsel to do the same even though I faced a seemingly impossible battle... But I like money so...

Nolan had a clause in his contract that stated if the 2004?05 NHL season was cancelled, then he gets a player option for 05-06. He tried to get both pay for the lockout year due to an injury AND the option year. You say you would do this, but I'm sure you can see how someone who had already earned close to $40 million in his career doing something like this might rub some fans the wrong way. I mean, cops who accept free coffee bothers you.

I don't think you can blame injuries on that one. The Leafs paid star prices for a guy who ended up being a pretty good depth forward while healthy,

Good memory but not perfect... THAT cop's sense of entitlement had as much to do with what bothered me then anything but anyhooo I can't say a blame Nolan for tyring and yes, absolutely I'd have at least looked in to it. Seems just the responsible thing to do anyway.

When the Leafs acquired Nolan he was a bonafide first liner and all-star caliber player. What else would you at attribute his lack of relative success in Toronto to?

Nolan had one season, in a contract year, where he was a legitimately elite forward. Outside of that year he was a 20 goal, 50+ point guy which is more or less what he was in Toronto. He was an older, physical forward with a nose for the goal coming to a team that already had a few of those.

And the price tag? A good young player who was coming off a very good playoffs, the team's best prospect and their first round pick in what was maybe the strongest draft ever.

Well, like I said, I was comfortable with the price tag and would do it again.

But you do see how it could be viewed as greed?

Well, I was trying to answer your original question. One might boo Owen Nolan if they'd watched the team's lack of young talent lead in part to 6 missed playoffs in a row and attributed some of the fault for that to the series of three or four picks/prospects for one aging veteran of questionable value trades that the team made.

Sure... Doesn't mean I'd boo him for that though.

You asked "Why would one boo Nolan?"

That is one reason, you may not agree with it, but I know for sure there are lots who do share this view and would boo him for it.

I don't have any positive or negative feelings towards Nolan's time as a Leaf.  He started out well, then fizzled out, but you could say that about a lot of Leafs players over the years.  I honestly didn't even realize he was still in the league.

I enjoyed fandom a lot more back in the old days when boos were a result of poor play as opposed to personal, legal, or financial B.S.  :-\

I really can't understand why fans would boo a player for trying to get money. It's not like he posted youtube videos of himself punching kittens.

Using the "he's already made $40M" argument is weak. No sure how that has any bearing on anything.

Do you enjoy booing just because it's Alfredsson?  Just curious.  :)
