Senators fined a 1st round pick for Dadonov

Senators are getting fined their first round pick in either 2024/2025/2026 for failing to disclose Dadonov's No Trade list to Vegas when they traded him last year.

A recap of what happened that led to this can be found here:

My initial reaction to this was that it felt like a very, very excessive punishment. Especially since I think there had to be some failings on both Vegas and the NHL for something like this to happen as well. But seeing two reports of people claiming Vegas feels like they were deliberately lied to about this makes me not quite as surprised.

Dorion fired.

I think he was already fired, they were just waiting for this hammer to fall (on him)

Someone really wants it to be known that Chiarelli is coming

Dorion has resigned and relieved of duties
Steve Staios is interim GM

A little greasy but at the end of the day, he was buying the team and it isn't like we're knocking off 250K for your troubles.

The irony of fining the Senators for not disclosing information while not disclosing information to Andlauer is funny.  The Pinto scenario seems like something that would take time because there was negotiation between Pinto and the NHL/NHLPA to come to his punishment.  Ownership should probably be informed of that though.

Andlauer has more than a fair arguement to question why it took almost 8 months to fine Ottawa for something that happened before the trade deadline.

There are "material facts" that need to be disclosed in any business buy/sell agreement, and maybe the league is saying go sue the folks that sold you the team because they knew.

But this has lawsuit written all over it...and it's more than "$250k".  A first round pick is worth millions.

The Melnyk group might not have been informed there were punitive actions forthcoming. And it sort of sounds like the NHL was miffed but wasn?t going to take action until more information was presented by Vegas recently.

Earlier this week, The Athletic reported the NHL had an ?active investigation? into the Dadonov situation.

Clearly, at some point over the past several weeks, new information has surfaced to corroborate Vegas? version of events ? that places the blame squarely on the Senators organization.

I would be surprised if the NHL doesn't have their butt covered.

The NHL would have been advised to be very careful what they say about it and to whom. If they spooked the buyer, they could be sued.

Andlauer's grievance is probably with the Melnyk estate (though they probably would sue everyone in sight to let the court figure it out). The Melnyk estate is responsible to disclose the potential liability to the buyer. A 73 page NHL report would have had to involve speaking to members of the Sens organization - so they had to know it was being looked it. Maybe Dorian forgot to tell Andlauer like he forgot to tell Vegas. It could be a partially innocent screw up where the player decides the teams he doesn't want to be traded to as a different time and they never filed that paper with his contract.

I think Andlauer has a legitimate gripe about the situation.  Not like it would have materially impacted the sale though.

Ironic however it came out the same day as the Dadonov punishment for lack of disclosure.

Regarding Pinto, he was outside of gambling jurisdiction, and had someone log into his account who was within legal jurisdiction to place a bet.  Half a season punishment seems excessive in that case.

I am a little jealous that their whole core is signed at what looks like fair-to-great-value contracts long-term. Kind of the opposite approach the Leafs took. They bet on their core while we waited and paid max possible dollars. Neither approach has worked for either team yet. I guess I am just annoyed that the Leafs' stars are better paid than most.

I get that feeling, and it's made even worse when Stutzle comes out and trolls the team on it.

However when you look at it, who on the Leafs is Stutzle a clear cut upgrade on?  Or Tkachuk?  They are great players but their contracts aren't huge underpayments at the point, and might only get there if they have some massive years.

They capped out their roster around a core that hasn?t made the playoffs and aren?t exactly setting the league on fire so far this season. They have some nice pieces, but it really feels like they?ve locked themselves into a middle of the pack team. They?re betting heavily on internal growth, as they have limited ability to supplement their current group.
