Series 34: Jays at Yankees

Apparently the Jays are close to adding Cliff Pennington from the D-Backs as a Kawasaki upgrade.

I don't know anything about baseball, but didn't the MLB trade deadline happen the week the Jays got Price, etc?  How can they add more guys now?

The July 31st trade deadline is the non-waiver deadline. Anyone moved after July 31st is subject to waivers. So basically it's for adding small, emergency pieces.

Baseball has two separate deadlines.

July 31st is the regular trade deadline.  August 31st in the waiver-trade deadline.  Trades in August require a player to go on waivers before you can trade them so it is sometimes harder to make a trade because any team below you can make a claim and nullify a potential trade.

Ok, so does that mean (roughly) that teams lower than you in the standings can grab the guy (leaving the team trying to complete the trade out of luck)?

Teams can pull guys back off waivers though, so you don't automatically lose them.  It's why you hear about some big name players going on waivers/clearing.

For example, James Shields cleared through waivers because some teams were concerned that San Diego would let the claim go through to get rid of his owed salary.

6-0 shutout victory.  Jays claim the series against the Yankees and go for the sweep tomorrow.  Estrada vs. Tanaka

Jays are now 2.5 GB of the division lead and are tied for the 1st Wildcard spot.

While it would be great to get the sweep tomorrow the Jays have already accomplished what they set out to do by winning the series; getting the W tomorrow would just be the cherry on top.

And, with Baltimore playing the Angels, they're guaranteed to either take sole possession of the 1st wildcard or put a little more room between them and the next closest team.

Gibbons said he got ejected for saying "can I talk with you" to the umpire today.  I really do love baseball but I could do without the egotism of the umpires.  Imagine if the NHL treated the referees with the same reverence.  There wouldn't be a single player left on the bench.  For some reason umpires are completely infallible and MLB defends them to no end.  I don't get it.

But they don't claim that they're infallible. They've brought in replay. The one thing they don't let you argue is balls and strikes and with good reason because if they did then every single hitter would argue balls and strikes.

So why do it? What good comes out of telling an umpire that you don't like his strike zone? The Ump today knew what Gibbons wanted to talk to him about. It's the one bell you don't ring.

In this case though I think Gibbons was going to ask the ump why he didn't check with the first base umpire on Donaldson's check swing. On the replay it sure seemed close, and in that situation the home plate umpire should be asking for the first base umpire's opinion since he has the better angle.

Bautista just crushed a home run. The Yankee fan who picked it up threw it back onto the field in disdain, and managed to hit Brett Gardner in the back.
