What is Sundin doing these days?  I would love to have him back to comment on the leafs now and then.

As per....

Yes, it's Berger.  Yes, the Leafs will honour Mats' # early next season.  About time!  :D

Oh god, I can't read that Sportsnet forum. So many haters are arguing that Sundin shouldn't be considered an elite level talent because longevity shouldn't count towards the definition of "elite". I don't know about you, but a guy who's tied for 25th all time in points (around there anyway) is considered elite in my book.

Congrats Mats.

Seems a little soon, Gilmour waited 6 years and Wendel waited 8, and for what it's worth, they both retired as Leafs.

Mats has been out of hockey for only two seasons, and retired as a Canuck.

Don't get me wrong, he is one of the all-time greats, but I think that the fact that he ended elsewhere should count against him in team honours, such as number-raising ceremonies.  It should happen, but if we held off a year or two, I'd be okay with that.  Plus, if we waited two or three, we might be able to do it with the Nordiques in town.

I give him a pass, because it wasn't his choice to end as a Canuck, he wanted to play in Toronto.

I dunno, I think that's kinda flawed logic in regards to his ending his career elsewhere. Gilmour spent all of one game before a career ending injury. He also didn't spend nearly as much time here as Mats did. Maybe we could've waited longer, but personally I really don't mind as the wait time, to me, is arbitrary.

Really? you're considering Gilmour's 3 minutes of ice time retiring as a member of the Leafs? Gilmour hadn't played for the Leafs since 1997...

Mats played almost as many games as a Leaf as Clark and Gilmour did, combined, scored more goals as a Leaf than Gilmour and Clark combined and had only 4 less points as a Leaf than Clark and Gilmour combined. I'd say it's more than fair the the team honours him much closer to the end of his career than they did with either Clark or Gilmour.

Mats has scored more goals and more points than any other human living or dead as a member of the Toronto Maple Leafs.

That's about all there is to it.

Sittler had a better points per game average.  ;)
