The Official 2014 MLB Thread

Clayton Kershaw is apparently about to sign a 7 year, 215 million dollar extension with the Dodgers. 30.7 million a year and most people I see are shocked the Dodgers got him at that price.

It's hard to say if he necessarily would have received significantly more if he waited to see the open market, since that's already the largest AAV for a contract in MLB history and there are only so many teams that can afford and are willing to pay that much for one player, but, I also imagine the opt-out clause he has after year 5 helped keep the number down a little bit. If he continues to be the best pitcher in the NL for the next 5 seasons, I expect he'll exercise that and get another contract that dwarfs this one.

I don't know, when I look at the way teams spent this off-season and the way everyone is flush with TV money? I think that if a pitcher of Kershaw's ability was on the open market there would be a handful of teams that would be willing to pay him just about whatever it took to land him.
 
Just looked at the box score for the Pirates / Reds this evening and saw it was 7-7 in the 6th. The interesting part is that the teams have combined for ten home runs so far - Cinci has three two run homers and a solo shot. The Pirates have six solo homers (two homers in each of three innings), and all three times they appear to have been back to back (Walker and Sanchez have done it twice) - I wonder if that is some kind of record.

The only run in the game not scored off a home run was the Pirates' first run.

The back to back part might be, but, the record for combined home runs in a game is 12. Most by one team is 10 (our own Blue Jays against Baltimore in 1987). Had the Pirates not scored their first run without a homer, they would have tied the record for most homers in a game without scoring a run in any other fashion, and they're one off tying the record for most solo homers in one game.

Looks like hitting back to back homers three times in a game tied a record - it's only the third time it has ever happened. The game was suspended until today, and with three innings left to go, who knows what we will see.

So through 7 innings today, Masahiro Tanaka has struck out eight and only allowed two bunt hits. Through his first three starts he's given up 15 hits in 21 innings with a K-BB rate of 26-2.

I still want to see how he fares when the weather heats up and hitters get going but he looks great early on.

Yeah, there's always that "first time through the league" sort of thought and I realize it's the Cubs but I've got the game on and he's just making them look awful.

So pitchers can pump fists and yell when striking out a batter, but a batter can't admire his hit?
 
I never got these bench-clearing brawls. Like, 98% of the guys who rushed out didn't do a thing when they got there. Did the guys really have to leave the bullpen to get in there?

These baseball "brawls" are embarrassing.  They always remind me of the kinds in high school/elementary school who always tried to start fights that they never intended on getting into.  They all bounce around and pretend to be tough, and 99% of the time it is over stupid little things.
