From smartphones to tablets to computers to 3D tvs..... it's all here in the Technology Thread.

Feel free to post any questions, reviews, etc., you may have and interact with other posters. (This is actually a resurgence of an old thread, which should serve it's purpose well again).

As anyone tried out or bought any of the new tablets on the market (besides the Ipad, I mean)?

Yesterday saw the release of the newest member of the tablet market, the HP Touchpad (manufactured by HP).  It's sleek look,  (albeit with a plastic back will make fingerprint mania a new game in town),  comes with some good features, namely beta flash, excellent email interface, "Synergy" (communicate with HP's Pre smartphones merely by tapping the smartphone to the screen of the tablet),  the "Just Type", and of course, it's WebOS,  optimized for the tablet.

Of course, there are plenty of there tablets to choose from, such as the Blackberry Playbook, built more business users, but sporting an excellent flash player right from the outset (embedded in the device's software, straight out of the box) in a smallish 7" frame.  Videos look super crisp on the Blackberry's screen.  For those using web-based email, there shouldn't be much of a problem, though there will be an update to patch this at some point, soon.
Those who already own or use Blackberry's array of smartphones will be better served by pairing the Playbook together via Blackberry, which is why the Playbook isn't considered something for everyone, definitely no email client, nor contacts, or calendar, again, only when paired with a Blackberry smartphone.  Sounds disappointing?  Sure is.

Acer, Motorola, and Samsung have all come out in full force.  What do these have in common apart from the HP Touchpad and the Blackberry Playbook?  Why, they're all Android tablets using the latest Honeycomb system on the Google browser.  According to tech reviews,  the 10.1" Samsung Galaxy Tab seems the only one of the three Android tablets to rival the Ipad, both in speed and interface. How interesting that Apple is suing Korean-based Samsung, claiming infringement on the Ipad software/design/similar interface, etc.  And, Samsung is counter-suing Apple for something similar, the other way around.

The very interesting fact is, that Samsung's processors and chips are the most widely used hardware found in many devices, yes, including the Ipad.  Now that's technology food for thought!

Did I neglect to say a few words about the Acer Iconia and the Motorola Xoom?  Ah, yes, the former is a discounted, but not necessarily a terrible tablet, pretty decent with  10.1" bright, HD screen, right up there with the Motorolq Xoom.  Plenty of specifications the Iconia a500 offers, and costs less than the pricier name tablets mentioned above.

The Motorola Xoom is among the priciest, but has the absolute best screen resolution in it's class, utilizing the latest Android Honeycomb.  Oops, mistake, for the Galaxy Tab has the absolute latest version of Android.  Anyways, the Xoom is no slouch, is perfect for video & gaming, with it's HD screen, then again, the Blackberry Playbook's HD screen is also in league with the Xoom's, keeping in mind we're comparing 7" to a 10.1" screens here.  In fact, many tablet aficionados think that the just as pricey 10.1" Samsung Galaxy Tab is a better buy than the Xoom, at least for now.

Those who are looking for a tablet that can be used both alone and with a keyboard (this makes for a tablet/netbook combo possibility), can look to the Asus Eee Pad Transformer, a speedier processor than the Acer Iconia a500, slightly costlier, but well worth it for those who desire such a design and style.

The truth is, that as valiant as many of these tablets mentioned above are trying to be in attempting to become the next Ipad, none measure up in the popularity department.  Ipad is, and will remain the most sought after tablet on the market according to analysts, until 2015.  Until Android is improved still more, and the competition upgrades further and provides a better app market for consumers, compared to Apple's which carries a whopping 95,000+apps, only then will a more viable alternative be worthy of it's price & choice.

If I had to choose a tablet, other than the Ipad, let's just say, at this point I'd choose the HP Touchpad, partly because I wouldn't yearn foe Android right now, and am enticed by the Touchpad's beta flash (web) as well as the (Palm) WebOS.  It's good enough for what I would need it for, plus it's interface is both easy to use and convenient.

I wasted a lot of time with the Blackberry Playbook. I was looking at it for business use and feel it's software is not ready for prime time business users - in fact, it was kind of pathetic as was their support. Their ebooks capability was poor as well in my opinion. The software available for Blackberry phones is much, much better so don't assume one has the other.  The Samsung tablet was substantially better for the business applications and ebook capability I was looking at. I'm not aware of anything the Playbook does that the Samsung doesn't do but can't say the same thing the other way. Besides the Ipad, I haven't spent any time with the others.

Wow... another one of those life imitating art things... Well, Gene Roddenberry anyway. Very cool.

I really enjoy mine and highly recommend it (and I was a staunch PC guy). I just read that the issue with flash will also cease to be as Adobe releases an update that will allow developers to program for almost all devices.

I wasn't sure where to put this, but as it's related to technology, I'll put it here.

http://www.thestar.com/business/article/1057766--crtc-bans-exclusive-content-contracts

Seems like a HUGE step in the right direction, though I haven't had long to process it.

In a decision that is part of the regulator?s response to the convergence of phone, cable and broadcast services in Canada over the past year, the CRTC issued a permanent ban on so-called exclusive mobile content deals.

It said the integrated media giants must share their programming with rivals under fair and market-based terms and cannot restrict content to their own wireless and Internet subscribers. Companies must negotiate the terms but cannot deny service while those talks are taking place.

The regulator also took steps to ensure that telecom, cable and web companies that also own broadcast networks play fair with smaller competitors.

As well, it recommended measures that would provide more choice for cable and satellite TV service subscribers.
...
The regulator said Wednesday that any program broadcast on television, including hockey games and other live events, must be made available to competitors under fair and reasonable terms.

I've hated the fact that the broadcasters owned the channels and the content on the channels.  This way, any channel can get any content, be it a channel broadcast through standard TV mediums, or newer ones like Web and Mobile.

The one aspect of the CRTC decisions I liked is the one that brings pick and pay options closer to reality. The sooner that happens, the better.

Unless Adobe has massively improved the security of Flash, Apple still won't allow it on their mobile devices.

Apparently the upcoming version is a little more to Apple's liking....I can't recall where I read it honestly. I really haven't found it to be a big issue without it personally.

We have all heard of Albert Einsteins theory of relativity -- E=mc^2 -- which translates to "energy equals mass times the speed of light squared".  We also know that the speed of light travels at approximately 300,000 kms/sec, or, 299,792 kms/sec to be exact.

Well, according to Einstein, nothing could possibly travel or smash this "cosmic speed barrier", until.....

.....the discovery of neutrinos.  Huh?  That's right, neutrinos, up until now, relatively little-known particles of physics.  Scientists at CERN (European Organization for Nuclear Research) -- non-related to the Hadron Collider project -- claim to have released a neutrino beam from an accelerator From a lab in Geneva to a laboratory in
Italy, the Gran Sasso National Laboratory ( in the Abruzzo region), traveling 730 kilometers in 60 nanoseconds faster than the speed of light!!  These were the preliminary findings as more tests and collaborations between labs wiil be done, as scientists still remain skeptical of such experimentation of this magnitude.  It could be the start of the proof of the discovery that will eventually prove Einstein wrong.....

Read this recent fascinating story at...http://www.cbc.ca/news/technology/story/2011/09/22/technology-particles-light-speed.html

P.S.  The Gran Sasso National Laboratory is located near Aquila, in the Abruzzo region of Italy, and the Gran Sasso, by the way, is now a newly-minted official Italian national park (Italian heritage).  My parents hometown is nearby!  :D

I've always believed in faster-than-light particles! Glad to hear they finally may have proven it.

Now to prove the tachyon!

Just for iPhone/iPad users that are interested - Tiger Woods PGA 12 is available for free. Not bad....even better when you don't have to pay!

As if I don't have enough issues these days, my laptop has decided to crash again. For the 2nd time in just over 3 months I get a corrupted boot file and a pile of work to restore it. Guess it's time to look at a new system.

Apple Keynote speech going on right now. I can't believe how much an innovator the early iPhone models were. Now they're playing catch up and asking people to pay a premium for it.

So far I'm very underwhelmed.

Dual core and a new camera seem to be the only changes from iphone4.

Those are the big changes, yeah. Also, there's a 64GB model available.

I'm overdue for an upgrade (still using an LG Shine) and was hoping the iPhone 5 would be announced today, but, oh well. I'll probably pick up a 64GB 4S instead.

I use a Blackberry Pearl flip and still haven't figured out how to do 80% of what it does.

I'd love a touch-screen smart phone but honestly can't justify it cost-wise.

Picked up a Nokia E73 a month ago from Mobilicity on their $25 unlimited talk/text/data + CallerID (paid $150 outright, no contract). So far so good, its essentially a Blackberry Curve without BBM for half the price and a higher build quality.

I'll forever be sold on Nokia phones since I ran over the last one I owned with my car and it still worked.
