John Tavares is still a Maple Leaf [4 years, $4.38mil AAV]

That's a fantastic deal. You absolutely cannot argue that Tavares left a lot of money on the table here

I don't doubt Tavares could have received $8m on the open market. Give this man his flowers. He didn't bleed the team dry and gave some back. Kudos. It will help the team.

With this done, if you assume Knies get $8mil (between Johnston and Peterka) and Jarnkrok and Kampf get moved once their bonuses are dealt the team looks somewhat sorta like (obviously lines can change):

Knies-Matthews-Domi
McMann-_____-Nylander
Laughton-Tavares-_____
_____-_____-_____

Rielly-Carlo
McCabe-Tanev
Benoit-OEL

Stolarz
Woll

Myers
Reaves

That leaves $17.8mil in cap space. If you assume $4mil to fill out the 4th line that leaves $13.8mil to fill 2 forward spots.

I am by no means an advocate of this, but... Zibanejad incoming?

I'm not sure how total time played together changes the rate of scoring.
Very small sample size for Domi vs. a very large sample size with Marner is pretty relevant. Matthews and Domi had one great 14-game hot streak together at the end of last season. I don't think we should make too much generalizations from it though. He also scored at an absurd rate when Holmberg was on his line in very, very limited minutes that season I don't think anyone here is saying they should be playing together because of that.

His contract was front loaded so that's a plus. He's due a $2.5mil signing bonus presumably on July 1st. Once that's paid out he'll be owed $1.5mil for this upcoming season and $3mil in each of the next two. With the rising cap those salaries and a $3.75mil AAV don't seem that crazy for a likely 40 point forward with some bite to his game.

Crazy like a fox. What he left on the table for this deal will be more than made up for in a lifetime of endorsements etc. in Toronto, where he's cemented himself as a Leaf Legend.

It's not too late to follow suit, #16.

Unfortunately it's all the sample we have but there's some proof in the concept. Over 147 minutes Domi-Matthews line below scored at a rate of over 1 more goal per 60 minutes than the Marner-Matthews combo.

I dunno this all assumes that this means there's something that Max Domi, the same one whose career high in assists is 44, was able to do something to get Matthews' personal shooting percentage and on-ice shooting percentage to hit rates that he's never had over the course of a full season before in his career. That stretch really just screams crazy unsustainable hot streak to me.

And I'm not saying they couldn't have any (offensive) success again if they played on a line together. The big concern is that Matthews' usage would have to dramatically change (as it did when they first played together) and as it stands the Leafs still need him to perform in match-up roles. If they acquire a Phillip Danault-type player then sure them playing together could possibly make a lot of sense.

Is Phil Danault available? :D

With Tavares re-signed, the Leafs still need a Center. I don't want them going into next season with Matthews - Tavares - Laughton - Kampf down the middle.

Edit: Coyle was just traded to Columbus. I would have taken him.
