2019 Blue Jays General Discussion Thread

The Jays lashed out several homers in defeating the Red Sox 6-3.

Drury, Gurriel, and Jansen came up big against Bosox pitcher Chris Sale.

Jays starter Jacob Waguespack pitched a decent five innings, while the bullpen provided relief the rest of the way.  Giles closed out with the save.

Ohhhh!

Jays closer Giles gives up a solo to Boston?s Hernandez in the ninth ? Bosox win 8-7.

The Blue Jays racked up an early lead with Jansen and Tellez leading the way, but the Red Sox weren?t ready to quick so fast.  They scored six runs in the sixth off a combination of Pannone & Mayza, eventually taking the lead.  That?s when the Jays Eric Sogard doubled to drive in Jansen for the tying run.  Good, good, until...

...the Bosox?s Hernandez had other ideas as he ripped a solo homer into the stands and Boston came away the winner in the bottom of the ninth against the Jays closer Giles.  (*sigh*)

The Baltimore Orioles (25-61j come to the Rogers Centre for a three-game series against the Blue Jays (33-55).

The Orioles sport the worst w/l record in the majors, and spiralling further downward, as they lost 13 of their last fourteen games.

The Jays are coming off their series versus the Red Sox where they lost two out of three.
After this home series with Baltimore, Vladdy Guerrero and Marcus Stroman are off to the All-Star game next week.  Guerrero Jr., participate in the Home Run Derby event, while Stroman will pitch for the A.L.

It should be noted that Stroman missed his last start due to ?pectoral cramps?.  He should be a go for the ASG.

GO JAYS GO!

Jays lose to the lowly O?s 4-1 with Dylan Buddy stymying them every step of the way.

What of the Jays starter Aaron Sanchez?  He pitched well, struck out six, allowed two runs in five innings on the mound.
It was reliever Biagini whom the Orioles got to with the extra runs.  Natch.

Refreshing!

Blue Jays wallop the Orioles 6-1 as starter Trent Thornton has himself a big day on the mound and comes up a winner.

Toronto staked out a 6-0 lead by the sixth inning for which they never looked back.  Hey, these are the lowly Orioles!

The Blue Jays (34-57) take on the New York Yankees (57-31) at Yankee Stadium for a three-game series.

The Yankees are the runaway division leaders in the A.L. East, maintaining their 6.5 GL over the second-place Tampa Bay Rays.

The Yankees are also a rumoured destination for the Jays Marcus Stroman, as in trade rumours and such.  If that should transpire, New York will simply add to it?s formidable rotation which already consists of a former Blue Jay, J.A.Happ.

We?ll see.

The Blue Jays meanwhile will go about their business as usual, hoping to ignite more offence which up to this point in the season has been in a somewhat anemic state.  That shouldn?t stand as a blight to it?s core young players & prospects ? heck, didn?t Vladdy Jr. just blast away the competition at the ASG Home Run Derby!

Th Jays lineup has shown it?s capable of slugging with the best, and when they do, they often do so in a monstrous way, blasting homers after homers.  Gurriel Jr,, Biggio, Jansen, Galvis, Guerrero, they have done their part to showcase themselves.  But alas, it will never be enough, not when the pitching rotation has been subpar, to say the least.

Injuries have taken their toll on some of the Jays starters, with the bullpen?s equal lack of support.  The Jays started the season at or near the top of the ERA ladder, only to taper off woefully.

The second half of the season, barring trades, should see the team up itself in the w/l column, and avoid being among the absolute worst team in the majors.  The way things are evolving, ?growing pains? and all, whatever management decides to do will continue to be in the best interests of the Jays future.

So, starting in this series against the Yankees, polar opposites to the Jays...

GO JAYS GO!

The Yankees use a four-run fifth inning to shutout the Blue Jays 4-0.

They  scored all four runs off Jays starter Aaron Sanchez, who up until then, was pitching fairly well.  One lousy inning.

The Yankees? Germ?n threw a three-hitter and struck out seven.  There went the Jays offence.

The Jays Randal Grichuk paves the way for Toronto?s 2-1 win over the Yankees this afternoon.

Grichuk drove in two runs while the bullpen came up big for Jays starter Clayton Richard (who left the game early ? arm tightness).
Reliever Joe Biagini took the win.

The Yankees starter J.A. Happ took the loss.

Yankees take the rubber match 4-2.

With the Yankees ahead by two, the Blue Jays got solo consecutive home runs by Sogard & Grichuk and it was all tied up, until the Bronx Bombers surged ahead.

Jays starter Marcus Stroman had himself a strong outing striking out seven but took the loss.
Yankees starter Tanaka allowed the two homers but was credited with the win.

The Blue Jays (35-59) venture to Fenway Park for a four-game series against the Boston Red Sox (50-43).

The Red Sox occupy third place in the A.L. and are 1.5 GB for the second A.L. wildcard spot.  The Bosox are hoping that this second half will provide a chance to move on up both in the standings and in their quest for a WC berth.  Their rotation isn?t exactly something to sing about especially the struggles of lefty Chris Sale.  They acquired RH Andrew Cashner recently from the Orioles as insurance.

Of course, when compared to the Jays, the Bosox rotation is set or shall we say consistently set, whereas Toronto?s is constantly making a change every now and then.  The latest for the Jays was placing starter Clayton Richard on the 10-day DL.  Not too long ago, even Stroman missed a start.  Seems like no one is immune.

Boston is second in th A.L. in runs oroduction (519) and first with OBP .344).  Their BA (.271) is also second-best.

The Jays? Randall Grichuk has been on a tear of late.  He had a good series against the Yankees, hitting RBIs, homering, including some outfield histrionics.
The Jays are going to need much more of this if they are to avoid being among the worst teams in the league this year.  It?s time to get going and this includes Home RunDerby King Vladimir who needs to connect more at the plate.

Patience, people, patience.  Ah, yeah, forgot that.

GO JAYS GO!

Coming off the heels of a 10-8 loss Monday night, the Blue Jays weren?t about to let this one go, as they padded their lead by scoring four runs in the ninth enroute to a 10-4 wallop of the Bosox.

Justin Smoak and Tėoscar Hernandez both homered  while Grichuk, Jansen, Guerrero, & Sogard all contributed on the scoresheet.
Good offensive team effort.

Jays starter Jacob Waguespack, recalled from Buffalo, didn?t fair too well on the mound, allowing all four Boston runs in a little over four innings.
Reliever Justin Shafer got the win.

Blue Jays lose a close one, 5-4 to the Bosox.

Tėoscar Hernandez and Gurriel Jr., led the Jays with two RBIs each, both homering and hitting long bombs over the green monster in left field.

Jays starter Aaron Sanchez was in the loss column allowing four runs in six innings.  Particularly damaging was Boston?s Rafael Devers? four RBIs.  Oof!

The Blue Jays (36-62) visit Comerica Park for a three-game series against the Detroit Tigers (29-63).

The Tigers are dead-last in their A.L. Central division, owning among the second-worst w/l record in the majors.  The Tigers rank nineteenth in the Stolen Base category (37) compared to the Jays who rank twenty-sixth (30).  Toronto leads Detroit in the HR department ranked fifteenth (136) to the Tigers twenty-ninth (83).

Stats aside, the Tigers have won just four of their last twenty seven games.  How?s that for ugly.

The Blue Jays are coming off a three out of four games series loss to the Red Sox in their most recent series.  Not exactly something inspirational, but they did exhibit offence and the Red Sox weren?t exactly unbeatable.

Still, the losses keep mounting for Toronto, and what with the trade deadline looming, expect activity on the part of Jays management.

Meantime...
